The first time that Enslaved came out and admitted that their prog influences were being pushed to the fore, it was a shock to the system.Looking back its easy to see this album as the bridge between the bands past and future. Each song follows a chaotic path held together under the all encompassing mystical concept, and with song titles in both English and Norwegian you could tell Enslaved had a tough time deciding to sever the ties with the blunt Viking Metal of old and embrace the new, shackle-free version of the band. In places it sounds reminiscent of latter day Carcass in its clinical coldness, but the result is an awesome set of crafted extreme Metal that relies as much on atmosphere as it does brutality.
