Dual Disc reissue of Morbid Angel's classic 'Altars of Madness' hits the shops on March 13th 2006
Few albums struck a chord within the ears and minds of the late '80s underground metal scene like Morbid Angel's 'Altars of Madness' did at the end of the decade. 'Altars of Madness' set a new precedent for metal bands to reach and, along with fellow Floridians Death, pretty much laid down the blue print for what we think of when we now hear the words "Death Metal", thus setting the standard by which virtually all extreme metal over the course of the next decade would be judged.
Fusing the primal fury of extreme thrash legends such as Slayer & Possessed with the extremity of the burgeoning UK grindcore scene principal songwriter and lead guitarist Trey Azagthoth orchestrated music that was almost absurdly frantic and technically convoluted, yet extremely memorable and somehow hugely melodic. Lyrically, no other artist up to this point had aligned themselves so closely with Satanism or spat this sort of blasphemy with as much conviction as Morbid Angel’s frontman David Vincent. This, coupled with the impossible speed of powerhouse drummer Pete Sandoval, undoubtedly made a great impression on the minds of not only a thousand thrash metal bands, who instantly switched direction to embrace this new form of barbarity, but also those Northern Europeans who were destined to become pillars of the infamous black metal scene of the early 90's.

Showcasing outstanding musicianship and a frightening sincerity in the message it conveys, it's easy to see why ‘Altars Of Madness’ is still considered by many to be a defining moment in the Death Metal and is still held in reverence by the majority of the genre’s devotees.

Now upgraded to Dual Disc format, this latest release of 'Altars of Madness' not only contains remixes of "Maze of Torment", "Chapel of Ghouls" & "Blasphemy" but also, on the flipside, boasts the first ever official DVD release by the band - the long sought after November 1989 Nottingham Rock City show filmed on the bands first ever European outing; the legendary Grindcrusher Tour (alongside Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower and Carcass) - The first 5,000 copies of this release come with a free replica of the ticket to this infamous show.

The energy and power of this performance demonstrates not only why Morbid Angel were catapulted to huge success in the years that followed but also captures the exact moment that Death Metal outgrew the underground and established itself as a credible metal style in the wider marketplace.

Top Ten Score in Alternative Press Metal Poll
Morbid Angel are awarded a Top Ten ranking in Alternative Press' "25 Most Important Bands In Metal" poll in the April 2004 issue of the magazine.
To arrive at a definitive list of the most important metal bands currently active in the scene today, AP asked a host of musicians, writers, and other metal experts to submit lists of their own top 25 picks, then tallied the results.

Morbid Angel is ranked at #9 on the list, which also includes Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Lamb Of God. With the exception perhaps of The Melvins, Morbid Angel is by far the longest-running band to make the list. It's a true testament to the longevity of Morbid Angel and the perpetual relevance of their unique music that they have placed so highly on a list mainly comprised of young, up-and-coming bands.

Morbid Angel's eighth album, "Heretic" is out now.
With lightning-speed precision drumming, extraterrestrial guitar solos, mind-bending polyrhythms, and existential lyrics, Morbid Angel set the standard for death metal in the 1980's. In the nearly twenty years since their inception, Morbid Angel have relentlessly pushed the boundaries of metal with their ever-evolving musical and lyrical visions. Morbid Angel always have and always will occupy a unique, solitary place in the hierarchy of metal.

Morbid Angel's latest album, "Heretic" proves yet again that Morbid Angel know no boundaries. "Heretic" is a multi-layered, multi-dimensional album that provides an amazing glimpse into the minds of its creators, and provides a whole new milestone for the rest of us to derive inspiration from.

AZAGTHOTH HONORED IN GUITAR WORLD
Morbid Angel's guitar wizard Trey Azagthoth is included in a list of The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists Of All Time in the March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine. Ranking at #55 on the star-studded list, Azagthoth is described as: "One of the most crazed characters to emerge from Florida's late-Eighties death metal scene... A frenzied player, he combines furious, angular power chords with ripping leads, but his songs never lack dynamics, since he often chugs through visceral, pick harmonic-tinted rhythms before lashing out with torrents of blinding noise." Among the other luminaries on the list are Tony Iommi, Eddie Van Halen, and Steve Vai. Congratulations to Trey!

MORBID ANGEL: "H2K3"
Morbid Angel have entered D.O.W. (Diet Of Worms) Studios in Seffner, Florida, to record their next album. In the studio are guitarist Trey Azagthoth, drummer Pete Sandoval, and bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker, along with co-producer Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez who has worked as Morbid Angel's live front-of-house sound engineer for the past eight years. Tentatively dubbed "H2K3", Morbid Angel's next album is as-yet-untitled but is rumored to begin with the letter, "H", in keeping with the alphabetical order of all the band's preceding albums -- beginning with their 1989 Earache debut, "Altars Of Madness", and continuing through their last release, 2000's "Gateways To Annihilation". "H2K3" is slated for a fall 2003 worldwide release on Earache Records.

One of the earliest American bands to sign to Earache, Morbid Angel are one of the most influential metal bands of all time. Since their inception, Morbid Angel have consistently pushed the boundaries of metal, defining and redefining the genre of Death Metal. Equally revered for the technicality of their music, the brutality of their sound, and the creativity of their lyrics, Morbid Angel are true pioneers whose ever-evolving visions continue to guide them into new, untouched musical territories. We wait with baited breath for "H2K3", another landmark album in the making.

ERIK RUTAN MOVES ON
Erik Rutan has announced he is leaving Morbid Angel in order to devote himself entirely to Hate Eternal. Erik began playing guitar with Morbid Angel in 1993 and has played on three of the band's albums, as well as numerous national and international tours. In 1996, Erik began forming Hate Eternal, a blistering Death Metal band that takes technicality and brutality to new levels. In Hate Eternal, Erik fully expresses his own musical and lyrical ideas, handling vocals and guitar, and the majority of the songwriting. Hate Eternal's debut album, "Conquering The Throne", was the high-water mark for Death Metal in 1999 -- a furious yet precise assault on the senses. Hate Eternal's second album, "King Of All Kings" is now finished and is set for release on September 16 in Europe and September 17 in the US.
Erik had this to say about his decision to focus all his energies on Hate Eternal:

"Being in Morbid Angel for the past nine years has been the greatest time of my life. To play in my favorite Death Metal band of all time has been a tremendous honor. I want to thank Trey and Pete for all the great years and all they have done for me, and all the fans who have supported me and will hopefully continue to support me in the future. It is now time for me to stand on my own two feet with Hate Eternal."
