DEICIDE complete "Homage For Satan" video shoot
Satan’s favourite sons Deicide spent 12 hours locked up in baking Floridian conditions last weekend while they filmed the video for the skin-flaying new track ‘Homage For Satan’. In temperatures reaching almost 100º Fahrenheit, the band ripped through the track again and again with a level of energy and enthusiasm that would destroy many less committed bands, drummer Steve Asheim in particular pulling of the almost inhuman feat of playing for 12 hours straight in broiling conditions without dropping a beat.

Never one to be outdone, Glen Benton then upped the stakes considerably by donning the now legendary God deflecting armour, last seen at the Roadrunner All Stars show, and performing the latter part of the video shoot effectively wearing a second skin. Add to that some blistering guitar work from Jack Owen and Ralph Santolla and the climactic scene of the video where Glen is seen spewing forth bile and you just know that this might just be one of the most intense videos of 2006. Directorial duties on ‘Homage For Satan’ are handled by Detroit based crew Scrambled Visual, who will be filming some additional Christ-baiting material back in Detroit this weekend.
Expect ‘Homage For Satan’ to be hitting your TV screens later this month, if you can’t wait that long, head on over to iTunes where you can currently download an exclusive early mix of ‘Homage For Satan’ as part of ‘The Stench Of Redemption 666 EP’. The album ‘The Stench Of Redemption’ will be in stores August 21st (UK/ Europe) August 22nd (USA).

Interview with STEVE ASHEIM on metal, music, and THE STENCH OF REDEMPTION!
Francisco Eguiza of Metal Storm.ee recently conducted an E-Interview with Steve Asheim of DEICIDE on music, the longevity of Deicide, as well as their forthcoming release, "The Stench of Redemption." DEICIDE are eager to begin summer and fall tour dates and are set to offer a full out metallic assault with "The Stench of Redemption." In this interview, Steve reveals his thoughts on the success of Deicide over the years and sheds light on their mysterious lives. Log on to Earache.com for breaking DEICIDE news and tour updates and mark your calendars for 8/22 - "The Stench of Redemption" is coming for its' reckoning!

To view the original interview, click here.
HERZEBETH: Hello I'm Francisco Eguiza from Metal Storm, to begin with I want to thank you for allowing me to do this short Interview, and of course for Giving your fans a chance of reading a little more about Deicide, so Thank you very much. I have limited space so i'll just start the shooting.
First let me go back to the old days, you are an original member of the band, your early albums became a cult and are now worshiped by many metal fanatics and bands; but I really want to know what "Deicide" and "Legion" mean to you now and meant for you then; in those days did you see yourself achieving everything that you have accomplished up until now?

STEVE: I personally take everything year by year. The 1st record I was still amazed we had a record deal. For legion, I was too busy worrying about how we were going to get a second album out to really think about what it meant, i was just trying to stay in the music business and stay brutal.
I love what I do; it means more to me than just about anything. So that was always my main focus, even now, year by year, I'm just trying to stay in business. But when you have a chance to look back 15 years and say "wow, that shit is pretty good, it still holds up". That's because real metal never dies. Some people call those albums classics, I say I'm glad to be doing this as long as I have, and to be considered by some to be classic is an honor, it's icing on the cake.

HERZEBETH: There was actually a little lump in your trajectory, when Deicide released in 2001 the album "In Torment In Hell" many people (both press and fans) responded in a bad way towards this album, then you even switched labels and some other things happened. What do you think it happened back then? And how was the band reaction about this issue?

STEVE: I think that whole period was brought on by being burnt out, but not on music or the business, just burnt out on each other. I kind of always thought we were being kept down by our record company and stuff like that, but after we did "in torment" and were finished with our deal and moved on to a great deal with earache, we were still not up to 100%, by then it was obvious to me that it wasn't the record companies fault, it was us, we were sick of each other, well basically the Hoffmans and Glen were totally sick of and hated each other, and the quality of the bands work and the fans suffered for it.

HERZEBETH: You are about to release a new album; I've heard the EP already and the structures sound darker and more complex than usual. What can everyone expect from the new full-length "the stench of redemption"?

STEVE: Well, the 666EP is a great taste of what's to come. Basically it will be more of the same. Epic yet accessible, complex yet catchy, fast yet rhythmic, even a slower part or two. All in all I think it's our best work, it's certainly the work I'm most proud of.

HERZEBETH: You also released your first DVD recently, was it a good experience? or was it really annoying to have cameras shooting your rehearsals and asking you annoying questions…like this one actually.

STEVE: some people get all rockstarry and act like everything, like shooting vids and doing press is a big fucking hassle. I say, bring it on. It beats the alternative...like scrubbing toilets or being a bum. Doing the DVD was great fun so I don't know what some people's problems are. I actually can't wait to do another one, which there are definite plans for.

HERZEBETH: Your music has been really controversial since deicide was created, how do you see this fact; is it a great free publicity campaign made by purists-hypocrites secretly worshiping Satan? Or is this affecting your works and tours and you hate them just for being alive?

STEVE: I say the more controversy, the better; it's what attracts peoples' attention. But if that's all you have to offer, you're gonna have a pretty short ride. You've got to back up your bullshit w/ substance. And hey, we've been around almost 20 years, we must be doing something right.

HERZEBETH: Now to other things. You, along glen Benton, gave birth to one of the most respected bands ever in death metal history. In those really old days what influenced you to form a metal band and to write and play music as you did, what was the main trigger that pushed you to do those things?

STEVE: What pushed me towards extreme drum playing was all the lame ass pussy drum playing that was going on in the 80's. All the so-called metal really made me pissed that it was even being called metal. But in the 80's was also the birth of true metal, Metallica, Slayer, Dark Angel, Destruction, Sodom. I wanted to capture all the heaviest moments from those bands and just play like that.
Those guys are all masters and laid the ground work for what was to come.

HERZEBETH: Years and years have passed since the creation of "deicide". You've released many albums since 1987; please tell me which album is the one you love the most, the one making you say "damn I'm really so fucking proud of you my little musical son!"

STEVE: I'd have to say "stench" is definitely my favorite and the one I'm most proud of, glen too I think. It really all came together on this one, the material, the players, the sound, the vibe... It was a real pleasure doing this record w/ this line-up, almost effortless. But from the past, I'd have to say the last time we felt this good about a record was "once upon the cross", because of the blend of material and sound, but listening back, "cross" seems very slow. Live we play those songs much faster. Actually we've always played them faster than they are on the record. When we went in the studio in 94' and i recorded the drum tracks at the speed i had been playing them at practice, we only had 22 minutes with the same amount of songs, they were just faster. 22 minutes does not an album make so I re-recorded the songs at a more controlled pace and still only ended up with 30 minutes. So there it was.

HERZEBETH: To end the interview. Since you are Steve Asheim, one of the monsters of metal to many people, please tell everyone what metal really means to you.

STEVE: Man, I've been living metal my whole life practically. I got my 1st album "kiss-dressed to kill" when I was like 7 years old. I got my 1st drum kit when I was 12 and the 1st song I played was iron maiden's "the prisoner" horns up to Clive burr! I got my 1st double bass kit when i was 16 and immediately started playing Lombardo, Hoglan and Ulrich. And a year or 2 later when my own band was formed and we started playing around Tampa and meeting all the other local bands... death, morbid angel, obituary, it was like "fuckin'a, let's do this"! So to me, metal is all I know how to be, not just something to listen to. Without metal, i might as well call it a day!

HERZEBETH: Thank you very much for your time Steve; thanks for answering my weird questions and hope to see you on tour soon (don't forget about Mexico).

STEVE: Thanks bro. One place we definitely won't forget about is Mexico, we love playing down there, the fans are loyal and true and we always have a blast. See everybody down there real soon!

'Stench of Redemption' Tracking Nearly completed
Florida based Death Metal act Deicide checked in from Morris Sound Studios in Tampa, Florida where they are nearing completion on their latest addition to the death metal pantheon. The album, titled The Stench of Redemption, is set for a 6.6.06 release date and is the first recorded outing sans Hoffman Brothers.
The band was incredibly excited to bring their latest vision to life which may explain their relentless speed in the studio. The band has been putting in long hard hours to get everything down on tape and is in the final stages of tracking now. As of Thursday, vocal tracks have been completed in addition to the previously completed rhythm and lead guitar tracks and drums. Vocalist Glen Benton is currently milling over the recorded vocals to see if there are any portions of the recording that he'd like to thicken up or re-track to improve them. Along with that, Bass tracks should be finished as well by the time you are reading this.
Deicide will add the finished touches to the album, moving on to the next stage of mixing this week.
Deicide's The Stench of Redemption is scheduled for a 6.6.06 release date. Their Earache debut, The Scars of the Crucifix, is available in stores now and through the Earache webstore.

The Best Lead I've Ever Recorded
Deicide are still in the midst of recording at Morris Sound in Tampa, Florida this week. The band are working dilligently to complete work on their latest Earache release, "The Stench of Redemption", scheduled for a 6.6.06 release.
In a phone conversation wih drummer Steve Asheim we got a full update. "We're tracking a few more leads and Glen has just started on his vocal tracks" said Asheim, "But things are coming out really great." One particular moment stood out for the band when guitarist Ralph Santolla finished up recording a lead. "Ralph came out and he said 'I think that's got to be the best lead I've ever played', at which point Jim (Morris) said 'you know, I think that's the best lead I've ever recorded" Steve said. Coming from someone like Jim Morris who's worked with so many of the metal greats that is a seriously powerful statement.
Additionally, Glen Benton has entered the studio and has been tracking his vocals over the last few days. Things are going very well and the vocals sound great or as Steve Asheim put it they sound "Sinister as Fuck." Benton's vocal have helped to really carve out a better image of what the final results of this session will be.
Lyrics for "The Stench of Redemption" remain on the darker side of things, nothing out of the ordinary for Satan's favorite band. Benton stated that one track, titled "Desecration", deals with Grave Desecration and is an immediate response to the recent controversy in France. Glen has already shared his feelings on the subject but this is sure to add fuel to the fire.
The band is now logging between 10-16 hour days on this project and seriously busting their asses to get this record in the can and ready for fans to go apeshit for. Deicide fans, be prepared.

Deicide's "The Stench of Redemption" is scheduled for a 6.6.06 Release date. Check www.myspace.com/thestenchofredemption for updates.

The Stench of Redemption In-Studio Report
Deicide is currently in the midst of recording their second full-length release for Earache records. Logging in some crucial time at Morris Sound in Tampa Florida, Deicide are running well ahead of schedule and from the looks of it will have everything finished in record time.
Checking in with the band yesterday, much of the music portion of the recording has been completed for the 11 plus song album. All of the drum and rhythm guitar tracks were completed according to drummer Steve Asheim. The band were setting their sights on dialing in the lead guitar tracks for dual guitar attack Jack Owen and Ralph Santolla to add to the mix. "Everyone is excited how it’s turning out so far," said Asheim, "we're looking forward to what the leads and Glen's vocals will do to add to the record." The Almighty Glen Benton was currently prepping himself to lay down some of the most brutal Deicide vocals so far within the band's 16 plus year career. The world is looking forward to hearing the next chapter in this now legendary metal band's discography.
The Stench of Redemption marks the first recording outing with the new Deicide line-up post Hoffman Brothers. Both Benton and Asheim are confident that Jack and Ralph would outdo guitar tracks from the previous albums. The album is currently scheduled for a release for the most unholy of days, 6.6.06. The blasphemy will return in 2006!
Deicide's first ever live DVD "When London Burns" is in stores now and available through the Earache web store.

Glen Benton responds to being kicked off Hellfest due to French grave desecrations
Currently seconded in Morrisound Recording, Tampa, Florida with producer Jim Morris recording new album 'The Stench Of Redemption' DEICIDE’s Glen Benton responds to the organisers of the French HELLFEST festival who announced that DEICIDE had been sacrificed from this years event due to unconnected grave desecrations in that country recently.
After warming up by laying into former DEICIDE members Eric and Brian Hoffmann, Glen turns his attention to Hellfest’s decision to unceremoniously drop the band:
“Someone does something stupid and us (Deicide) and the fans have to pay for it.... we have gone through great strides in not cancelling shows and getting the promoters confidences back after that whole fiasco with the ding dong brothers (dumb and dumber)....”
“And we have done just that with every one of our tours being a huge success ever since...so now I have to deal with childhood antics prohibiting us from performing...so a few graves got disturbed. That’s my doing? Maybe you French people should start putting the dead under the dirt like the rest of the world.......
Where is your backbone you big shot promoter?????”
“Sounds like you’re scared to stand up for what is right...we get the boot in exchange for what?.... pleasing some cheese eating bidet squatting French fuck over in the local government.... ahh take your festival and shove it up your ass.... I’d rather sit here at home popping pimples on my ass now than do their fest.... especially after their show of weakness towards censoring us.... as always have a nice day you dick.... Glen Benton”

DEICIDE kicked off Hellfest due to French grave desecrations
According to the official Hellfest website DEICIDE have been dropped from this years festival bill due to circumstances, very much out of their control. It seems that the events organizers got the jitters and bowed to local Government pressure to have Glen Benton’s satanic death metal outfit removed from the ironically named HELLFEST after graves were desecrated in Nantes.
Here is the official Hellfest statement about Deicide:
“Because of what went on in Brittany during the last few months and this cemetery profanation, we must cancel the band Deicide to be sure not to have any problems regarding the festival. We are looking for a band that can replace them and we'll keep you informed very quickly."

According to Sven Letourneur, joint editor in chief of France’s HARD ROCK magazine:
“In fact, I read about it in the news, a few idiots, probably kids, profanated a cemetery near Nantes and wrote "When Satan Rules His World" on one of the tombs... The authorities found that it was a Deicide song title, so news went out in the media, etc”.

Le Telegramme newspaper from February 11th ran with a front-page story “Sur La Piste Des Satanistes” (On the track of the Satanists) having this to say about DEICIDE:
"When Satan Rules His World" is the exact title of a song from an American death metal band, an extreme music style that comes from hard rock, that appeared in the 80's and with lyrics that deal about everything that's morbid and gore. Name of the band: Deicide. Quite explicit...
DEICIDE: "Hatred of christianism"
"This idea is not new says a specialized magazine on the Internet. But we've rarely seen this hatred so strong and for such a long time". Portrait of the vocalist, the very "nice" Glen Benton, on the same website:
"He is a very controversial character who gives demon names to his sons, who branded an inverted cross on his forehead and who promised to commit suicide at the age of 33..." On another website, we can read the French translation of one of the songs from Deicide, named "Once Upon The Cross”: "Fear him (repeated seven times)... Satan". In the "Meaning of the song" part of the website, only one phrase "No explanation yet for this song".

Deicide are currently into the second week of recording sessions at Morrisound Recording, Tampa, Florida with producer Jim Morris for their most blasphemous album ever: 'The Stench Of Redemption' which is due for release on 6.6.06 on Earache.

Chile concert cancelled controversy
Satanic Death metal legends Deicide have run into a bit of controversy on their South American tour. Problems began several weeks ago when Aldo Cornejo, the mayor of Valparaíso (Chile) ordered to have promotional posters removed from the city and the walls of the El Huevo club.
These posters, promoting the bands upcoming appearance, featuring a photo of Jesus' face with a gunshot through the forehead. Controversy over the posters caused the show to be moved from the El Huevo club to another nearby club in Quilpué.
Eventually Deicide were forced to cancel their performance on the 21st of February all together after they continued to receive additional difficulties in Quilpué as well. Apparently this isnt the first time a metal act has had difficulty performing in the area, back in 1992 Iron Maiden couldn't play in Santiago due to a censorship issue.
The band are now scheduled to perform this evening at Teatro Novedades in Santiago, Chile. Glen Benton was contacted today for his comments on this series of events and he said: "The mayor of Valparaíso is just scared, and he owes me money." When asked about the promotional posters depicting Christ, Benton stated "That wasn't my idea, I didn't have anything to do with that." Additionally, he stated that the riot police had already arrived for the evening's gig and he expected it to be a "classic one." Benton also planned on holding up a sign before the gig saying "U2....you suck...Bono is an asshole." U2 arrived in Santiago today. Controversy at it's best.
Glen Benton - controversial, wild, one of a kind, a true American classic.

Glen Benton on BBC2 documentary
Deicide frontman Glen Benton will feature in an hour long BBC documentary called Death Metal Murders (part of the acclaimed ‘This World’ series) which explores link between Heavy Metal music (specifically Death & Black Metal) and Satanism & murder.
The show will air at 9pm (GMT), Thursday 24th November  on BBC2.
Of the young heavy metal fans in this picture, three are now dead; four are on trial charged with murder; one is serving 19 years; two more of their friends are serving long prison sentences. They were called the Beasts of Satan and their story has gripped Italy for more than a year. With unique access to them and their families, as well as graphic police footage, This World asks - how much did their addiction to satanic Death Metal music influence their descent into torture, sacrifices and murder?
The film also travels around the world, from Milan to Oslo to California, investigating the bizarre underground scene that is Extreme Metal music. We interview the extraordinary musicians – from Glen Benton of Deicide (who has an upside down cross branded into his forehead) and Necrobutcher of Norwegian Black Metal band Mayhem, to a Capuchin monk who struts the stage of a Metal festival in Northern Italy roaring out Heavy Metal songs, to self-confessed Swedish Satanists Dissection.

“Bleeding on your knees/ My satisfaction is what I need/ The urge to take my fist/
And violate every orifice/ You're nothing/ …Beaten into submission/ Raping again and again.” These are the lyrics of Sex. Murder. Art. - a 1995 track by American band Slayer, who have sold millions of albums around the world. They and other Death Metal bands sing about rape, torture, necrophilia, murder and Satanism. Over the years, this type of music has been blamed for driving teenage boys to murder and suicide. The parents of Elyse Marie Pahler took Slayer to a California court in a failed attempt to ban the sale of this kind of music to children, after their daughter was murdered by Slayer fans obsessed with Satanism.

“No-one can contradict me when I say that Heavy Metal and Satanism are closely linked.
They go hand in hand, they’re inseparable. I say this without the shadow of a doubt,” says Michele Tollis, father of Fabio, who was murdered in a Satanic ritual by the Beasts of Satan sect in Italy.  Michele has become something of an expert in the genre, having attended more than 80 Heavy Metal concerts during a six year search for his son which culminated in the discovery of the body last year.

Not surprisingly, Death Metal musicians deny that they have any responsibility for the actions of people who profess to be their fans. “I say don’t blame people like me, and [Marilyn] Manson, because we never said, ‘Hey, we’re going to be role models for all your kids.’ That ain’t what this is about. It’s about entertainment.” Says Glen Benton of Florida Death Metal pioneers Deicide - who were the favourite band of the Beasts of Satan.

And indeed there is little evidence to suggest that normal well adjusted kids can be driven to murder by music.  And yet the concerns persist. According to Don Roberts of Stanford University, it is not the majority of kids we should be worrying about. It’s the kids who already have problems with violence or depression who perhaps should be kept away from Death Metal. “What the music may well be doing is simply reinforcing beliefs that they might have started with in the first place, and building on them and justifying their world view, legitimizing the way they feel. The lyrics are violent, they lyrics are misogynist, the lyrics are depressed and depressing, the lyrics are satanic, they talk about suicide, they talk about self-mutilisation. The very kinds of things we’re worried that these problem kids will get engaged in.”

This appears to be born out by the experience in Norway. In the 1990s, more than 40 Churches were burnt down by followers of Norwegian Black Metal (a fusion of Satanism, Norse Paganism and noise). State Prosecutor Bjorn Soknes interviewed many of the arsonists and found they had a lot in common. “They were young, 16 to 22, they were lonely people. Many of them told us they were listening over hours to black metal music before they burnt churches.” Yet the hysteria that the Church burnings produced – it is still something of a national obsession in Norway - has only served to spread the gospel of Black Metal around the world. Bands like Britain’s Cradle of Filth sell hundreds of thousand of albums.

Necrobutcher is bass player of the most famous Black Metal band of all – Mayhem. He acknowledges that the huge controversy surrounding the band has only fuelled the cult of Black Metal: “The peo
