CULT OF LUNA'S "SOMEWHERE ALONG THE HIGHWAY" IS NAMED ONE THE THE TOP ALBUMS OF 2006
CULT OF LUNA have yielded bounties of positive press and recognition for their latest Earache release, “Somewhere Along the Highway,” which has captured fans and new listeners with its’ genuinely dynamic, unique sound.
Metallically savvy and diverse, DECIBEL magazine have named CULT OF LUNA’S “Somewhere Along the Highway” #5 on their “Top 40” of 2006 list – praising “Somewhere Along the Highway” as an album that “...makes its points straight away, evoking a rich gamut of bad moods, than marching purposefully toward the gray at the end of the tunnel.” Atmospherically driven, yet ominously organic, “Somewhere Along the Highway” was recorded in very basic conditions, augmenting the already diverse feeling of the music. CULT OF LUNA have recently recorded a video for “Back to Chapel Town” - check it out at www.cultofluna.com! CULT OF LUNA will be launching into a full Swedish tour in February of 2007 in full support of “Somewhere Along the Highway.”

Cult of Luna film new video
Swedish art-noise collective Cult of Luna have filmed a video for the "Back to Chapel Town", a track that features on their latest album out on Earache records "Somewhere Along the Highway".
Filmed in Umea near where the band are from, the video took 5 days to make but much longer to plan...
Johannes Persson and Erik Olofsson came up with the concept and directed the video themselves.
"Its about a dude" says Johannes trying to explain "a man waking up in a world he doesn't know, he knows nothing of his past or where he is, people treat him like air or are very suspicious of him"
When asked how he felt about filming his own video Johannes says "It took fucking ages to arrange, we shot for 5 days and I've never felt so out of my element, but it was fun, and definitely something I would like to do more in the future" The video mimicks the dark graphic feel of the album, and was even shot in the same kind of colour as the artwork on 'Somewhere along the highway' The video is due to be finished by the end of September check earache.com for more updates and your local music TV!

FAN INTERVIEW WITH CULT OF LUNA GUITARIST, ERIK OLOFSSON by Herzbeth for Metalstorm.ee via Email

HERZBETH: Hello I’m Francisco from Metal Storm; first of all I want to thank you for allowing me to interview you. Now to the mandatory part ok? Can you please explain your project to the people who’s unfamiliar with it? Please give us and introduction of what “Cult Of Luna” truly is.

ERIK: Cult of Luna is a Rockband from Umeå, Sweden. We're 8 persons and by combining our different musical skills and inspirations we try to write music that feels interesting to us. 4 albums have been released and we've been touring serioulsy the last 3 years. Everything is done by ourselves – that is producing, recording, mixing and design.

HERZBETH: Now to my first question; is there a profound reason for choosing "Cult Of Luna" as your band's name? I mean, is there something behind it or was
it the only thing you could think of at that moment?

ERIK: "Just trying to capture the mood of the music you know... "

HERZBETH: The music you create is really profound in many ways; what do you really want to transmit to the people who listen to your music, any emotion or feeling in particular?

ERIK: The thing with our music is that it goes up and down. Varying quite alot and I guess that goes with the emotions of the listener as well. As long as you feel something when listening to our records I'm happy even if you hate it. Like I'd rather get a real bad review than one that is just medium.

HERZBETH:Tell me about your lyrical content, “Cult Of Luna” writes about complex ideologies with a philosophical narrative; lyrics are often misapprehended, people usually interpret expressions independently and then they forget about the actual meaning of those words. Can you please explain what have you been communicating lyrically in your albums?

ERIK: Yeah it' leaves alot open for interpretation, which is good I think. I must say that i have really nothing to do with the lyrics since it's just Johannes and Klas who writes. But we've never been much for pointing fingers. It's all wrapped up in metafors. The man subjects however has been surveillance – you know like big brother are watching conspiracy. The early lyrics we're also very apocalyptic. For the last album though the subject is about male loneliness and escaping society.

HERZBETH: Before I start asking about your new album I have another question for you; your music has a lot of conversions and it’s really versatile generally speaking; I can see you have huge musical knowledge and appreciation. Is there any song in music history (metal or not) that makes you say “Fuck, I wish I could have done that song”, a song that you would have loved to write?

ERIK: A song for you – by Gram Parson
I do not listen to metal and long for the day when we can release something that doesn't get so strictly associated to that genre.

HERZBETH: Let’s talk about your new album “Somewhere Along The Highway”, If I’m not mistaken you’ve had a couple of difficulties with the release date; it was moved from April to August am I right? Why did this happen? Was it a problem with the label, the studio or just personal matters?

ERIK: It's been released in Europe allready (April) I can't believe that the US date is in August! I don't know how that could happen. That's too bad. I can assure you that the problem is not in our hands.

HERZBETH: What can we expect of this new record?

ERIK: Expect a less polished sound – not as produced as "salvation" definitively a more rough sound. We didn't have much time or budget on this one so we decided to do it that way which I think is great!

HERZBETH: I’ve heard the advance promo; this album shows great musical evolution, the structures are multifaceted and generally the band shows a more intense emotion in “Somewhere Along The Highway”. What does this album means to you as a whole?

ERIK: Like I mentioned earlier the recording process was different from what we were used to. It was quicker and much more intense. While recording we sometime felt like we were losing the grip, but eventually we pulled it together and now afterwards it doesn't feel that much different like it did then. But as allways I'm most proud of the latest release and hopefully that remains until our next recording session.

HERZBETH: Every album “Cult Of Luna” releases hides a general proposal and an imposed concept; can you please explain the general idea and concept of
“Somewhere Along The Highway”? And how did you come up with it?

ERIK: Male loneliness – I was very inspired by a book by J.M Cooetze about a man in South Africa with a hare lip. He escapes from everything and lives of the earth eating only pumpkins. Johannes had similar ideas for the lyrics about loneliness, it all has a kind of countryside vibe to it.

HERZBETH: Now to another thing; I think “Cult Of Luna” is a very artistic band, other than music, is there any artistic expression inspiring your work or your personality?

ERIK: For me it's all about the visual art. I'm doing all Cult of Luna artwork, graphics, photos and prints – so for me definitely. It's a great part of the time I spend on the band, it's very important for all of us. We want everything to go together like a concept.

HERZBETH: You are currently touring a lot; how is this working out for “Cult of Luna”? Are you receiving good reactions from the fans all over the globe?

ERIK: Yeah I suppose – we havn't been around the globe though... We'll Europe is good for us, especially France and some places in the U.K where we've been often. In the U.S it feels a little like starting over with beeing the supportact. We toured U.S with Mastodon last spring which was the perfect introduction for us. It was a truly great tour. I hope we can get over again soon.

HERZBETH: Your band is known for offering great live shows, can you please share with us the most bizarre experience you've had in a tour or in a concert?

ERIK: One time in Glasgow I had an experience that I speak of as "The Kafka nightmare". It's too weird to put down in text for you though. That whole European tour was seriously rough and nearly killed us...

HERZBETH You’ve created four full-lengths in your career; are you sincerely satisfied with what you’ve achieved over the years? Do you honestly feel happy about what you’ve done until now?

ERIK: Even though I'm happy with all of them I wouldn't dream of doing anything like our previous albums again. They represent a past time.

HERZBETH Now my final question for you; which tune is the one that will haunt you forever as the best song you ever played, the song that will make you say 'Damn I'm so proud of it' the day you die?

ERIK: I think that's something I can't answer until I get there. Need some time and perspective to realize what's good and not.

HERZBETH: Thanks again, now please feel free to add the last message of this interview.

New album April 24th
Apocalyptic Swedish outfit Cult of Luna have completed work on their latest album entitled 'Somewhere Along The Highway'
Slated for an April 24th release date via Earache Records, the initial tracking took place over 7 days in a wooden octagon barn surrounded by "Blair Witch" scenery close to the bands hometown of Umeå in Northern Sweden. According to Magnus Lindberg the remote location coupled with the spotting of "Wicca witch women dancing in the woods" and the actual acoustics of the barn itself all contributed towards creating the perfect ambiance to lay down the basic tracks which were done primarily live, as a unit - a departure from previous Cult of Luna recording protocol.

Further recording and mixing happened in Tonteknik studios where both the bands 2004 album 'Salvation' and it's predecessor 'The Beyond' (2003) were recorded. And the result promises to more raw and unpolished then the bands previous releases.

Somewhere Along The Highway
contains 7 tracks, namely:

Marching To The Heartbeats
Finland
Back To Chapel Town
And With Her Came The Birds
Thirtyfour
Dim
Dark City, Dead Man

In Studio
Metal innovators Cult of Luna have begun recording around 7 to 8 tracks for their follow up to their 2004 release, "Salvation", in their homeland of Sweden. The band was holed up recording in Umea based studio 'The Barn' for 7 days and we got some words from Magnus to find out how things were going...
(11/29) "The first recording session of the next Cult of Luna album is now complete! We spent 7 days recording mostly drums, bass and guitars in a wooden octagon barn outside of Umeå. The scenery out there is seriously like in that Blair Witch movie, we even saw 'Wicca-witch type looking girl' doing some freebase hippie dancing in the woods at one point. We think she suspected that she was being watched so we never saw her again. Bummer. In Other words, we were in the perfect mindset to record a Cult of Luna album.
Speaking of the barn itself, the big room sounds really awesome was perfect place to track drums. Thomas Hedlund joined us to share his amazing drums skills, and on some songs both Thomas and myself are playing simultaneously...pretty fucking rad. "
Those of you familiar with Cult of Luna's previous outing "Salvation", may recall the record having somewhat of a clean, unabbrasive sound to it, Magnus told us to expect something a little different this time around:
"Most of the tracks were recorded live, which is quite different than the approach we had for the previous albums. Expect a raw and unpolished album this spring."
The band is only complete with the first part of their recording process and they now move on to the next step in recording which takes them to Tonteknik studios for additional tracking. According to Magnus:
"Next thing to do is go into Tonteknik studios for a few days for additional recordings, like vocals, keys, noise and what not. After that I will be mixing the album before this X-mas!"
Earache and all of Cult of Luna's fans are awaiting eagerly to hear the final results of these sessions. Cult of Luna have treaded upon new ground for the modern metal scene and will definitely continue to surpass larger boundaries and defy all those who doubt them. We hear at Earache are sure this new album will prove just how innovative Cult of Luna truly are.

Details of brand new album announced
Cult Of Luna have confirmed that the bands brand new album is entitled 'Salvation'. This, the bands third album, follows on from the universally critically acclaimed 'The Beyond', and is due to be released on Monday 4th October 2004.
Cult Of Luna have confirmed that the bands brand new album is entitled 'Salvation'. This, the bands third album, follows on from the universally critically acclaimed 'The Beyond', and is due to be released on Monday 4th October 2004.

Recorded again at the famous Tonteknik Studios, in Sweden and produced by Magnus Lindberg, the album is described by guitarist Johannes Persson as "a natural progression for the band, but we hope it will appeal to a much broader audience than the previous two releases, as the tracks are much more melody-based, having Anders in the band has allowed us to use fewer samples this time and has meant our musical skills have improved immensely so we can push our music forward!"

Persson continues; "Salvation is definitely a heavy album, but we have learnt that you don't need 100 guitars to be heavy, we've been much more diverse in our use of sounds, they have more depth this time -  fewer walls of sound and more soundscapes!

In keeping with Cult of Luna tradition 'Salvation' will not be a short affair, as Persson explains that "one problem we have is that we have one song to many!  You can only fit 74 minutes on a CD so we're having to cut one song off!"

If you saw Cult of Luna on any of their UK and European tours last year then you will have already heard one of the tracks to be included on 'Salvation' - their set ender, the 13 minute epic 'Waiting For You'.

Details of the bands first headling tour in the UK will be announced very shortly.

Cult of Luna studio report
Cult of Luna are hard at work in Tonteknik Studio, Sweden, recording the follow up to the masterpiece that was 'The Beyond'. Most of the basic tracks have been laid down and some of the vocals, and the material so far is sounding IMMENSE. The band sent this quick update from the studio....

"Our first recording session is over, two weeks of really hard work. Almost everything, on this first batch of five songs, is done.
Things have gone really well and we've surprisingly stuck to the schedule. The only thing missing on these five songs is the electronic stuff, which will be added during the next session. During this 'inbetween sessions time', we will put the final touches on the last few songs, getting them ready for recording.......and if necessary redo some overdubs on the other songs too. We might be getting some cool and unexpected guest appearances on some songs! Stay tuned, more news from Tonteknik Studio will come in the near future.

CULT OF LUNA & SOCIETY 1 DOMINATE NEW PS2/XBOX GAME
Songs from Society 1 and Cult Of Luna are featured on the hottest new action game for PlayStation 2 and XBox... "Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel". Society 1's "Hate" and "All You Want", and Cult Of Luna's "Circle" are featured prominently in the game, along with songs by Slipknot, Meshuggah, Killswitch Engage, and more.

"Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel" is described as a "gritty and darkly humorous 3rd person action adventure" where players fight "ghouls, mutants, and other radioactive nightmares" in an effort to "maintain peace in the grim post-nuclear world of Fallout." Here's what Gene Semel, audio director for "Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel", had to say about the music in the game:

"I don't think anyone's taken this direction with a game as of yet in terms of the music... It's always going to be the ambient stuff that's present in the game, something that moves you through the game, but in terms of the boss fights and continuity of this game, it's basically metal. And since it's an action-oriented game, this is a decision we made early on. And, like I said, we've got some really big names that are going to be on this game. It fits really well...

What I've noticed in other games is that if you take metal music, and then you try to throw it in rock, pop, and hip-hop, then you've got this mishmash which may work for certain games, which is fine. But for this game, there's a story there, so you have to stay true to the story from the beginning of the game to the very end. I spent a lot of time and a lot of hard work picking out the tracks that fit very closely to one another. It's not the same song over and over again, but it has the same feel. And it's not just the feel of the beats, it's the feel of the rhythms and some of the melodies in the tracks. I think it's come together pretty well... With action, you need adrenaline."

Interview with Cult of Luna's guitarist Johanne's - the 1st European tour, re-release of 'Cult Of Luna' ..and .. er ..vegan cooking
One of the most exciting bands to emerge in years, Swedish slo-mo crushcore merchants Cult Of Luna have had a busy year. After releasing their second album, the magnificent ‘The Beyond’ and playing numerous well-received live shows, the band are back in the UK soon for a tour with ultra-hip metalcore mob Poison The Well, not to mention the arrival of a new video for ‘The Watchtower’ and the re-releasing of the band’s eponymous debut album. We spoke to guitarist Johannes Persson about the past, present and future of Cult Of Luna. Oh, and vegan cookery.
How has 2003 been for you so far?
JOHANNES: “To be honest, it’s been kind of slow. We got a load of great reviews for ‘The Beyond’ and we’ve played a few great shows but we had a lot of trouble with or booking agent so we didn’t do as many shows as we thought we would. Hopefully that is all going to change now. We’re already thinking about the next album, so we need to go out and promote ‘The Beyond’ as much as we can for the rest of the year. I’m surprised that ‘The Beyond' has sold as much as it has. It hasn’t sold a lot, because it’s a pretty extreme record, but as far as we’re concerned it’s been selling very well. We haven’t done a lot of touring and the video has only just come out.”
Tell me about the video for ‘The Watchtower’
JOHANNES: “It’s a good looking video. I have no problem with it, and I’m supposed to sell it, of course, but it’s not exactly what we’re all about. It would be a great video for another band. The biggest problem is that we don’t have a million pounds to do a video. That's a problem, but I must say that Pete has done a great video with the budget he had. It’s worth five times the money we spent on it. I watched Tool’s ‘Parabola’ video yesterday and that’s the thing we really want to do, you know? But it’s still a really good video. The people that have helped us with it have been really helpful. The actors have done a really good job, and the people who lent us the apartment, and the cameraman and the director. They’ve all done a great job. We’re not a big band. Earache is not an enormous record label, so considering the money we had to spend on it, it’s a great video.

Would you be interested in making a Cult Of Luna DVD?
JOHANNES: “That would be really cool to do, but the problem is that we could do that for the next album but we’d have to do 70 minutes worth of film. We make long albums! I do plan to learn how to make videos myself, learn about all the editing equipment. I really want to do a video for ‘Clones’ even if it’s just for myself! It would be good to make a music video or a short film. When I listen to the first album, it would be very cool to make something for ‘Dark Side Of The Sun’ the instrumental track. It’s more aggressive than ‘Clones’ so I have a few ideas of what I want to do. I have a friend who is a circus artist, so we could use a lot of fire and stuff. It would be great if he could do some kind of performance for that song. I’m sure he could do something cool with it.”

Does it feel strange to be re-releasing your first album?
JOHANNES: “It feels like we only finished recording it yesterday. It’s so fresh in our minds and things have happened so quickly. But we’re all very proud of that album.”

What do you remember about recording ‘Cult Of Luna’?
JOHANNES: “I remember it was a horrible time, the worst ever, in the studio. We were there for so long and we had to sleep on the floor for many nights. But although there are a few things about the album that I’d change, it’s still a good record for our first album. We didn’t really expect to get as many good reactions as we did. I suppose we must be doing something right, but we didn’t think the first album was a classic when we recorded it!”

You’re going out on tour with Poison The Well later this month. How do you feel about that?
JOHANNES: “I’m sure it will be a good tour, but one thing that really sucks when you open up for another band is that you don’t get the time that you need to do a decent show. Right now, if we play on our own we will play for one and half hours, but supporting another band we will get no more than 45 minutes. Right now whenever we play I am longing to play this new song we’ve written. It’s like a mantra, a religious thing for me. I hope we’ll have the opportunity to play it on this tour, and I think we will have to play a song from the first album, too. We will probably play a song that we haven’t played since we recorded the first album. It will be interesting to see if we can actually still play it! We will probably fuck it up. I’m not saying which song it is, because I don’t know if we’ll definitely play it or not.”

How do you think the fans will respond to the new material?
JOHANNES: “A lot of people have really, really got into the new song, but we had an entry in our guestbook yesterday that said that the person had seen Cult Of Luna twice before and really liked it, but that now there was too much of “that weirdo Isis stuff and not enough of that Breach stuff”. The new song is like six minutes of slow, mellow things and then six minutes of fucking mayhem! So I don’t know where that comes from. And that’s not even one of the most extreme things we’re working on right now. You never know, we might end up getting just one K in Kerrang! for our next album. That would be cool, though! But, of course, we might get away with it. The usual metal fan might really hate us, but they already hate us anyway”

As a vegan, how do you survive when you’re on tour?
JOHANNES: "Two words. Potato chips! No, it’s really no problem, it’s just that those gas stations don’t really have anything for me apart from potato chips and soft drinks. I’ve toured Europe two or three times now and it’s OK, but the service stations in the UK are totally worthless. Maybe you can buy an apple or something, for two pounds! We have named the new tour the ‘Health Tour’. We will work out as much as possible, doing push-ups and running as much as possible. We will lose some weight, I think, so I don’t need to eat anything.”

Are you a good cook?
JOHANNES: “When I try! I’ve been cooking for a long time. I became vegan when I was sixteen, so I had to learn pretty quickly. It’s been almost ten years now.”

So what's your speciality?
JOHANNES: “I have none! I do a pretty good pasta sauce, but you need some special ingredients. I use a lot of olive oil and some garlic and stuff like that. I did a really good chilli yesterday, actually. I don’t know what the spices are called in English. I used some strange spice, chilli beans and tomato sauce. And I use this soy meat stuff. It’s a good meal, at least.

I bet eating chilli goes down a treat on a crowded tour bus?
JOHANNES; “It all adds to the fun! When you’re on tour, very often the food is like overcooked spaghetti. It always sucks and people never think. I don’t know what’s wrong with people’s heads, making some strange stew that no one likes. They must know that we have to eat this stuff for several weeks, with no spices or anything else. Generally the food we eat on tour is alright, I guess.”

Finally, what are the band’s plans for the future?
JOHANNES: ‘It's so hard to say. Our ambition has been what it’s always been. It’s a cliché, but we just want to write good music! Our ambition isn’t just to maintain the same genre or actually being in just one genre. We don’t think like that at all. It’s never been our thinking to be like that, doing one kind of music. Our ambition is to make music, evolving the art form and moving forward. It’s important to see it like that. You don’t have to play prog rock, you can play stoner rock or whatever, but just don’t stagnate and stay the same. We want to evolve in the thematical sense and do something that feels honest. I know that when we’re doing some of these things there’s a risk that we'll lose some people along the way for being too extreme, but hey, that's the price we have to pay.”
