The Boy Will Drown

THE BOY WILL DROWN are a four-piece band based in Norwich/Colchester in the UK who formed in late 2006. Currently regarded as one of the most flamboyant and intense bands in the UK, they play a vicious blend of technical and experimental music based around grindcore and death metal. Refusing to play "sugar-coated" metal like so many other bands, THE BOY WILL DROWN do everything in their power to mesmerise and pulverise the listener, whilst simultaneously injecting an element of humour, fun and youth into the otherwise serious face of the extreme metal genre. THE BOY WILL DROWN create music that's technically breathtaking, with punishing metal riffage, yet still retains that "groove" factor.

Experimentation and freedom is what drives the band explains guitarist Liam, “We play what we want and don’t stick to the normal death metal thing. If we want to play polka, we’ll play polka”.

The quartet joined forces at school due to a mutual passion for metal and appreciation of bands such as Hate Eternal, Necrophagist and Napalm Death, which they list as some of their influences. They soon set to work unleashing The Boy Will Drown to the MySpace community. With an ever-growing fanbase eagerly awaiting their first full-length release, THE BOY WILL DROWN are set to follow in the path of their idols DECAPITATED and enter Hertz Studios in Poland this October to record their debut album.

*THE BOY WILL DROWN INTERVIEW...* Introduce yourselves and your positions in the band. Tom (vocals), James (bass), Liam (guitar), Ed (drums) Where are you based and how long have you been together? We are based in Norwich and have been going since late 2006. What’s life like in Norfolk? Is it a good place to live? What goes on there of interest? To be honest it’s pretty shit, there aint anything to do and the music scene gets worse every day, it used to be ok but no one gives a fuck any more they’d rather stay home and play X-Box or WoW. Is this the only line up or have there been other members? This is the only one. We’re all school mates so we hardly argue or any of that shit.
Where did you get the name and what’s it about? It’s just a shit name. It shouldn’t matter what a bands called, I love it when people comment on how shit our name is, I think it’s funny people feel they need to let their feelings on how terrible our name is known, like if they don’t, they won’t be able to sleep at night. Some people are pathetic. Let us have our shit name and when you start a band you can give it a way cool name like “Anal Shit Pig Cunt”

		Who are your main influences? Erm, mainly 90’s Nu Metal. Korn, limp Bizkit , Static X, God Head….. haha, but really, it’s hard to say we have a very eclectic taste as a band and like every genre but, metal wise we like stuff like; Hate Eternal, PsyOpus, Robinson, Crowpath, Nosebleed, Municipal Waste, Dillinger, Converge, Cannibal Corpse, Mastodon, Brain Drill. Anything fast. These aint really influences more just bands we like. You are one of the most technical and flamboyant bands we’ve ever heard. How did you get so damn technical and tight? We didn’t really set out to be a tech band, we just like fast music with chaotic structures. It’s just more interesting to play, fuck all this middle pace shit either really fast or so slow its almost going backwards, like Sunn O))).
What are your opinions on the current metal scene. Do you think it’s healthy? Erm … honestly we aint really feeling it. A lot of metal bands seem really tame and stick to the same formula. There seems like a lot of “death” bands that sound like metalcore bands but, with some dude shouting lower, we aint saying it’s shit just that it aint for us, even though we reckon people pigeon hole us in the same genre. What are you doing differently and what makes you stand out? I guess being a four piece is kind of different for a band like us it sounds more gritty. When we go to record we want to play on that.

		What do you think to the current scene on the other side of the Atlantic? You should really get over there and play! We’d love to. We think it’s quite similar to be honest. You have a 6 track EP. What are you plans for the album? Kind of, we recorded it but never released it but, we are looking forward to hertz, the songs are going to be faster and we are getting rid of some bits and we’re looking forward to getting the production we want instead of this digital crap that everyone is doing.
What’s next for touring? Where do you aspire to go and who do you aspire to play with? Our next tour is in December with bury your dead, as blood runs black, emmure and your demise. We’d love to tour with Dillinger or BTBAM… actually any of the bands we mentioned before, plus Slipknot.

		What do you do outside of music. Any interesting hobbies or interests? I don’t think so, music is everything. We notice that Liam has got pretty massive flesh tunnels how long has he been developing those muthas? About 4 years ish, half my right lobe fell off after I banged it on a car door. What’s your opinion on the Pig sqeals/ “Breee” vocals many death metal bands use,- is it for extra brutality? We are guilty of doing it unfortunately but, it worked to develop a fan base, it was a last minute decision in the studio, we knew kids would love it and they did, so I guess we sold out a bit, but who gives a shit. None of that sort of crap is going to be on the album, it’s purely stuff we like. Also it sounds rubbish, there’s no power or aggression to it, just thinking about it makes me cringe. Who’s the maddest fan you’ve met at a show, any nutters? Nah not really, eccentric people, but no fully blown nut cases.
Are any of you straight edge or do you all like to party? Nope, but Liam and James don’t drink and we all get pretty excited about the prospect of a cool glass of lucozade. Name your 5 favorite old skool death metal acts. Autopsy, Obituary, Venom, Morbid Angel, Abscess. What jobs do you have outside the band? Bums. Has anyone in the band had a near death experience or serious injury? Ed’s been stabbed…. Meaning he fell off a gate and snapped his arm, hahaha. Dick.

Do you get in the mosh pit or stand at the side?
A bit of both, we like to slam like it’s ’86 every now and again.

What’s the most surreal moment to happen in your life?
Being made captain of the starship enterprise.

You guys appear to live and breathe metal. What would people be surprised to hear about you?
Ed has had a Thai lady-boy orgy.
