OCEANO is the heaviest, most pissed off band on the planet. That's no small claim, but the 5 intimidating young men from Chicago, IL have the size to match such statements. With inspiration from bands such as BEHEMOTH and THE ACACIA STRAIN, OCEANO exhibits a youthful and modern deathcore sound as dark as the ocean depths and a distinct density to their heaviness that only an act from the city of broad shoulders could produce. Their motto, "Bringin the Beef" matches their identity of heavy, pissed-off guys playing heavy, pissed off music. With their 2008 signing to EARACHE RECORDS, OCEANO is primed to prove to the world that when they say they are "Bringin the Beef," they aren't fooling around.

OCEANO was initially a grindcore band formed in 2006 by guitarist, Jeremy Carroll (19). Following the departure of several band members in the ensuing months, Jeremy would look towards the Chicago metal scene to take OCEANO to the next level. Already having played with some of the heaviest bands in the city, Jeremy was able to develop deep ties to several of its top musicians. From them he completely rebuilt OCEANO, cherry-picking his way into the creation of a virtual super group of Chicago's roughest, most talented metal musicians. By 2007, the OCEANO line-up was complete and had begun their path to domination. Joining Jeremy were guitarist, Andrew Mikhail (20) and Kevin Colabuono (24), drummer Danny Terchin (18), and vocalist Adam Warren (22).

With a new line-up in place, new ideas and influences would be further incorporated into the band's sound. It became clear that OCEANO needed to evolve from its grindcore roots into something completely against the grain - something new and unexpected. That's when guitarist, Andrew Mikhail and bassist, Kevin Colabuono unleashed their secret weapon - Drop-A tuning. A signature of theirs inspired from their work in a previous band, this ultra low-end sonic assault could crush a person's bones by playing one mere chord. The tuning went along perfectly with the songs they had been writing which focused a more destructive deathcore sound. With everything in place, OCEANO needed one more element to take their sound above and beyond anything a deathcore band had ever done before. This vital element was pure, real-life anger.

Once stabilized, the band quickly bonded over the things in life that anger them the most. The people around them, the corruption of government, their standings in life - these are just a sampling of the many things that drive OCEANO every day. It is anger that fuels OCEANO and it is evident in their massively brutal songs such as "Inhuman Affliction" and "Samael the Destroyer." As in-your-face as OCEANO is on record, nothing compares to one of their raucous live shows.

The band lives and dies by the amount of bloody violence and intensity their audience brings to every show. They thrive on the audience's ability to give an already angry band entirely new reasons to get pissed. As has been the case many times over, If an audience isn't being violent enough, the band will become even more enraged and create the violence themselves. OCEANO loves nothing more than for others to share in their anger and aggression. They are called "the heaviest, most pissed-off band on the planet" for a reason, of course.

It is that reputation that caught the attention of EARACHE RECORDS in 2008. Blown away by the sheer animosity and power of "the heaviest, most pissed-off band on the planet," EARACHE immediately offered the band a deal that was made official that same year. OCEANO lays claim to over 11,500 MySpace friends and a growing number of fans going on YouTube to upload videos in tribute to the band. Those numbers are only bound to grow larger after the band's debut record (Recorded at Foundation Studios &Mac246; THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, MY CHILDREN IS THE BRIDE) starts "Bringin the Beef" worldwide in 2009.

INTERVIEW:

1. Introduce yourselves and your positions in the band.
Andrew, guitars-Kevin, bass-Daniel, drums-Adam, vocals-Jeremy, guitar

2. Where are you all based and how long have you been together?
-We've all been in the local music scene for quite some while playing in different bands. We're all from the suburbs of Chicago, IL, yet the MAJORITY of the band is based in and around the Northwest Chicago area. We've all have been "together" playing shows in our scene for quite sometime, but in different bands playing WITH Oceano on the bill haha. unknown fact, Jeremy and i were actually rivals for quite sometime due to drama between both of our bands. but, times change and we all slowly turned into Oceano one by one until we felt the line-up was right.

3. Whats life like in Chicago? Is it a good place to live? What goes on there of interest?
-We love Chicago. it's an awesome place to live and hang. in the daytime its not much but tourists, and business people, but when the sun goes down, that's when you see the REAL Chicago come out. The suburbs are pretty boring, but downtown there are limitless things to do....i.e. shows, restaurants, various other things.
Which makes it hard to kill time because there usually nothing to do when home! But we try to spend time with family and just hang with friends

4. There has been a few incarnations of the band hasn’t there? Why all the shifting line-ups?
-Tuberculosis from the air in our vile basement haha. No, actually we just think that some of us had a vision and a dream that others just couldn't see, work towards, or understand, it just took awhile to find the right chemistry between members. And this band has been around since some of us were in High School and not even members of the band yet. I think its safe to say most of the past line-ups were still young and probably not completely sure or committed to dedicate their time towards taking this band to where it has been working hard to get to now.

5. Where did you get the name and what does it mean?
-In all Honesty, I don't know what it truly means to us, but the way we see it,
when you think of the Word OCEANO, you think of THE OCEAN and hence thinking of an ocean you most likely imagine calmness, quiet, and peacefulness. Yet within the depths of the ocean it is very massive and dark. Upon the ocean you may experience devastating storms, and everything 'calm' and 'peaceful' quickly can change to Loud and Destructive. We'd like to think we best capture the Dark, Massive and Destructive nature of it all. And the meaning of Oceano is actually "ocean" is different languages, haha go figure. But seriously, think of how heavy an ocean must be....

6. Who are your main influences?
-The bands we share the stage with, and just everyday life, anything can influence us to write a piece of music.

7. You have been described as the heaviest band on the planet. What fuels this brutality and what makes you so damn heavy?
-Just being as angry as possible and bullshit we go through and just life when everything goes to shit. Even though we may not be THE angriest or THE heaviest, but we definitely are ONE of the angriest. haha. The anger just comes from within each of us. We all have our own reasons to get pissed on stage, and even off stage. It changes all the time. I think in a nutshell though, its LIFE. If no one is ever pissed about SOMETHING fucked up in this world, especially now, we'll never fight to change it.
And honestly, when were writing music it's usually a reflection of our lives at the moment. But it's the dark, depressing, pissed, and heavy stuff that gets on the Oceano tracks. Kind of like a reflection of hitting someone in the head with a slab of concrete and loving every second of it, hence trying to make it sound as heavy as possible haha.

8. What are your opinions on the current extreme Metal scene. Do you think its healthy?
-We think it's doing great, and we LOVE to hear of new bands popping up all the time and looking back, the metal scene has come a long way and as a whole is definitely reaching a high point in its history. But it has only just begun, extreme music these days is doing very well but, don't be fooled! Being a musician these days is pretty hard due to the increase in online piracy, gas prices, price/tax increases on equipment, venues getting shut down, trends coming and going and etc. But, we are all still truckin', making due, and trying to take it to the "next step" and we can't wait to see what's next.

9. What are you doing differently and what makes you stand out?
-Heavy music today is becoming flooded with bands who want to capitalize on the popularity of death metal or "down tune" to sound the heaviest of the pack. We never pursued this band to fit a mould or to get big off the popular trend. We simply like Aggressive, Dark and Heavy music. So we play Death metal.  Yet we combine each of our members own tastes and styles into the mix to create something a bit more genre diverse and a lot more Angry and heavier than we may have though we could create.

10. What do you think to the current scene on the other side of the Atlantic? You should really get over here and play!
-We all love so many bands from overseas and we can't wait to get over there. We've heard and seen nothing but good things, so we're beyond stoked for the opportunity to play for a ton of new faces, as well as meet and party with some new friends overseas!

11. You just finished a 6 track EP. What are the plans for the debut album?
-To Keep things as heavy as possible, but also to remember our roots and incorporate a lot more of the traditional aspects death metal was founded on.
Three words: Dark, Heavy, & SOLO's! But current point of view, our new material is sounding heavier, more aggressive, and more epic by the day. We want people and fans of all different styles of "heavy" music all around the world to pop in this cd or come see us live, listen, get pissed WITH us but enjoy it from beginning to end.

12. You have a lot of tour dates coming up. Where else have you got lined up and where do you aspire to go?
-One word, outbreak.

13. What do you do outside of music. Any interesting hobbies or passions?
-Some of us read comic books, skateboard, go to local shows, do Oceano work, hang out, have a good time, and wait for the next tour...pretty much sums it up.

14. We notice that Jeremy has got pretty massive flesh tunnels. How longs he been developing those muthas?
-He's been stretching for a little over 4 years its taken a lot for him and he's still got some stretching to do. Goal is somewhere around 2 1/4th or 2 1/2 inches!

15. Whats your opinion on the pig-sqeals/”Breeee” vocals many Death Metal acts use, - is it for extra brutality?
-Extra brutality? maybe. But a lot of bands have used it to it's fullest and it actually became such a trend as to where kids in lunch rooms of high schools all over the U.S. would do them to have their friends cheer them on for being "br00tal!" or when some metalcore bands all of a sudden had death metal "pigs" it's just not tasteful. It can be exceptional in some parts but you never want to over do it, moderation is key.

16. Who’s the maddest fan you’ve ever met at a show. Any nutters?
-We've seen a few haha. Once a kid was thrown out of a window at a show in Wisconsin this year during the last song of our set ("Samael the Destroyer")....shortly after that, many fistfights broke out and we kept playing'. But, we've had people thrown out of windows. kids just flat out punching kids, etc.; we have a lot of fans that go nuts WOO! hahaha. And for those at home, go on youtube and look up "Hate mosh." that's all we gotta say.

17. Are any of you straight edge or do you all like to party?
-Danny is Edge, everyone else in the band isn't. But we ALL still party hard regardless, including Danny. Everyone, Consider that a CHALLENGE!

18. Name your 5 fave old school death metal acts and why (they DON'T have to be Earache acts!!)
-We can't choose, there are too many to name haha, but if we had to collectively choose it'd be Decapitated (not that old, but still awesome), Suffocation, Behemoth, Nile, & Vader

19. What jobs do you have outside the band?
-Adam works at a Grocery Store, doing stock and cutting meat. Pretty metal. Danny works at hot topic. Andrew works security at his local guitar center. And Kevin and Jeremy are unemployed.

20. Have any of you ever had any run ins with the law?
-Aside from run-ins from cops from playing shows, and street fights. Andrew and Jeremy were actually apprehended for stealing a vehicle this year (obviously we didn't steal it, it was our retired Oceano van, "the gacinator" r.i.p.), but there was a misunderstanding and they were getting ready to go to jail for theft, but charges were dropped thankfully. Adam used to always get hassled by the cops in his area when he was in high school holding backyard wrestling events, didn't stop him either. Oh, and some speeding tickets for Kevin when he was younger. haha

21. Has anyone in the band had a near death experience or serious injury?
-Adam's had mostly Backyard Wrestling injuries; he jumped off a 30 foot light tower, fucked up his back pretty good for a while, not to mention getting cut 4 times with a pair of Scissors in his forehead and he STILL has all the scars. And tearing his ACL in his knee in the mosh pit at a concert. Pretty fucked up now that we think about it haha! Jeremy has a knee injury given to him from Andrew after a hiptoss gone wrong. And for Andrew, believe it or not, when he was a kid he was drowning in an ocean once because he swam way too far and the wave took him. And the lifeguard on duty was too busy watching a volleyball game and didn't see him underwater trying and failing to get back up, BUT by some miracle, his aunt was underwater while she was swimming all over the place and saved him. drowning in an ocean....weird.

22. Do you get in the Mosh pit or stand at the side?
-Almost all of us get in the pit sometimes, Kevin doesn't at all though. He likes watching bands and their energy onstage.

23. What’s the most surreal moment to happen in your life?
-Getting signed or when anytime when kids from different states know who we are, know our music, ask for photos and autographs, show us their homemade ringtones, or go absolutely nuts when we play. Did we mention getting signed? ha-ha

24. You guys appear to live and breath Metal. What would people be surprised to hear about you?
-How weird we all are ha-ha. as to how our sense of humour is, the way we hang out, our personalities, etc. haha. That we're all genuinely nice dudes and Adam actually SINGS in an acoustic band. pretty NOT metal haha.

25. Name your 5 desert island discs
-Its very hard to answer this because we all like SOO many different genres of music but collectively were all big fans of THE ACACIA STRAIN, MESHUGGAH, POISON THE WELL, BEHEMOTH & KILLSWITCH ENGAGE.
