Deicide arrested for bank robbery!
Floridian Death Metal stalwarts Deicide were detained today in Innsbruck, Austria for.... Bank Robbery.
Deicide drummer Steve Asheim got up early this morning to make a trip to the bank to deposit some money from merch sales when the bank staff became suspicious of his appearance and the fact that much of the money was marked with red dye.
Staff immediately called the police who swiftly arrived and took the Deicide drummer down to the station, suspecting that he had been involved in a recent bank robbery in the area and that he was handling stolen banknotes.

Questioned for a number of hours, Steve explained the banknotes were legitimate proceeds from touring, and that he had a leaky pen in his pocket which was responsible for the money's discoloration. Innsbruck Police were eventually forced to release Steve without further charge.

Deicide appear undeterred by the incident and will perform tonight at the Hafen club in Innsbruck as scheduled and continue with the rest of the European tour

DEICIDE ARE SURPRISINGLY BOOTED OUT OF THIER INDUSTRIAL ZONE PRACTICE SPACE
Floridian death metal legends DEICIDE were practicing in their industrially zoned practice space, surrounded by sonically booming concrete factories, when they were surprisingly bombarded by Florida’s Pasco County Sheriff’s department and asked to leave.
DEICIDE, who have been practicing in this legally deemed “industrial” area for quite some time, were immensely shocked and were forced to evacuate the practice space quaintly nestled between a mass of factories that inherently produce bombastic sound. DEICIDE are appalled at the random uprooting and have been forced to find a new practice space, inconveniently coinciding with the impending kick-off of their fall world tour. DEICIDE will be embarking on a world-wide fall headlining tour in support of “The Stench of Redemption” and are excited to bring a refreshed dose of brutality to the metal masses. Never a unit to be discouraged, DEICIDE are prepared to continue fine tuning their skills at another practice space and are set to deliver “The Stench of Redemption” with finesse and evil poise.

DEICIDE INQUISITION ANSWERS REVEALED!
The questions were notorious. The quantities were amazing. In the end, the DEICIDE INQUISITION yielded an amazing amount of thought provoking questions and in the end we were able to expand the inquiries to 20 questions! So here they are, real fan questions answered by the infamous founding members of DEICIDE, Glen Benton and Steve Ashiem. Winners have been sent out their exclusive box sets of “The Stench of Redemption” and should be receiving them shortly. Thanks to all the amazingly dedicated fans who wrote in - your support of DEICIDE and metal keeps extreme music alive!
Here are the questions and revealing answers:

QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY GLEN BENTON

How do you see the recent suicide of Dissection's leader Jon Nodveidt?
It seems it was a suicide in order to respect his own Satanic beliefs. How do feel about that, taking into consideration your own past declarations about your own suicide?
-Balmain Thibaut, France
We all made asinine remarks as children, mine was no different, I don’t find any honor in suicide and only cowards and losers choose that option instead of living with ones responsibility or the actions that landed that person in jail to begin with, do I feel sorry for him? NO. The person he murdered was someone’s child and being a responsible father of two, I would of been waiting for him to get out of jail… as to finish him off before he had the option of taking his own life. GB

I recently learned that Ralph is a Christian and has objected to certain aspects of Deicide's artwork and even chooses to wear a crucifix on stage to protect himself from the "evil" of Deicide.  My question is simply: is this a joke?  If not, I think you seriously risk making your fans question the legitimacy of Deicide's stance on Satanism.  Frankly, it is hard to believe that you are vehemently anti-Christian when you not only openly embrace one but embrace one within Deicide itself! -Rob Western
Ralph is as much a Christian as Joey Buttafuco. Everyone knows that it is I who writes the blasphemy, does Ralph have a hard time with it…who cares. Just like who cares what you believe - I don’t, unless you make it that way. Hey man, you’d be surprised to know how many closet Christians listen to Deicide and heavy shit…when it comes to that kind of crap, don’t you worry, ole’ GB is the only one you need to respect!

A lot of controversy arose the day Glen Benton appeared with an inverted cross symbol burned over his forehead.  Glen, if a child of yours eventually asks what is the meaning of the symbol you are wearing over your forehead, how did you get it done, and what were you thinking, what would you answer to him/her? -Mauricio Bolanos Molina – Doral, FL
I already have with my oldest son and at first I told him it was the result of running in church, then he got older and I told him the truth. He has no desire to follow in my crazy footsteps so you can breathe easy. GB

In the last few years, many death metal bands, including yours, have become overwhelmingly successful commercially (with Scars of the Crucifix being included in Billboard's Top 100 Chart, this is hard to deny).  Will this outstanding commercial success make the death metal music scene lose its essence?  How can you keep up your brutal level of lyrics and musicianship while at the same time maintaining a certain level of commercial success? -Hossam Mohammed Moness Al-Sawaf,  Nasr City, Egypt
I would have to say that this kind of music will never be heard in beer commercials or tampon ads, success to me is being able to pay my everyday bills, and what I do with DEICIDE and Vital Remains. No need to worry about in regards to believing in god and I can assure you sir, that hasn’t happened and never will so enjoy my blasphemy it’s my gift to you. As for Ralph, his guitar playing is the only thing I am concerned with. GB

My questions are simple but everyone wants to know. First, what really happened with the Hoffman brothers and Glen and Steve.  Second, I think I speak for everyone when I ask is Glen a real Satanist?  I've heard that he covers up his cross and takes his kids to church on Sundays.  Are these rumors true? -Anonymous, Colorado
You heard wrong fuck face! GB

Do you think your lyrical content may ever expand to cover other religions besides Christianity, considering the underlying religious motivation behind many global conflicts, such as the case between Israel and Lebanon? - John Ward, Cork, Ireland
Good question, you never know, depends on what spills forth from the lyrical abyss. GB

What does the word Deicide mean to you?  What does it mean to you personally as a life style, a person, a musician, and a father? -Jason McIntyre, Baton Rouge, LA
To me it means who I am where I’ve been, and where I’m going…see ya when ya get there. GB

If you guys could tour with one band you never have, who would it be and why?  Also, who is one band in metal you would never tour with? -Daniel Johnson  - Spanish Fork, UT
I would say Slayer to tour with…and to never tour with, any band with that Phil guy from Pantera, he’s a shit talking punk. GB

As Deicide were one of the creators of the sound and genre we call death metal today, as songwriters, do you think death metal can be taken any further, and if so, how?  On that note, do you think the genre allows you, as songwriters, to push your own boundaries as writers to "progress" or do you feel there is a responsibility to write within certain parameters to remain a "true" death metal band in the eyes of other people? -Scott van Dort  - London, UK
I think you have to stay in that frame of mind if you want to keep it old school, deviate and it could really cost you. GB

As opinions and beliefs shift with time, do you feel that if you live to be 80, you might look back on your art and find cause for any sort of regret or will you simply regard it as "that's who I was at the turn of the century." - Jason Perry, Springfield, IL
I wont be here when I’m 80 now that’s one age I can really predict to come true! GB

I love Legion.  What's up with the sound of glass shattering at the start of "Trifixion?"  My theory is that it's supposed to be the sound of stained glass breaking but have not yet been able to confirm this. -Dave Hofer, Chicago, IL
The cover of Legion shows the Trifixion in a glass sphere...the sound of glass breaking is that sphere being broke open. GB

Any band's musical as well as ideological tendencies certainly change as the year pass by, in some cases to the point of not being relevant anymore to their own fan base/scene.  How do you think time has affected Deicide musically/lyrically and what are the strongest contributions the band is currently doing for the underground scene in
general at this point?
- Mario Cubero Arias, Alajuela, Costa Rica
Mine haven’t and wont, and DEICIDE sticking it out all these years proves that. Sticking to what I stuck to then, and still sticking to it is all I can do for the scene. GB

What is the whole story behind Jack Owen's departure from one of the leading pioneers of death metal, Cannibal Corpse, and recruitment into one of the other leading pioneers of death metal, Deicide? -Kenneth Charlton, Lakeland, FL
That is a question for Jack, I can say this though, the man is a virtuoso….and is a standup person. GB

There has been a lot of speculation over Glen's reputation as a Satanist.  A while ago, Glen has claimed he was going to kill himself at age 33 to fulfill his destiny as the antithesis of Jesus Christ, yet he is still alive and kicking well beyond the age of 33.  Not that I want him dead, just curious as to why he would make such a bold claim and not see it through?  Was it simply nonsense from an intoxicated Glen?  Is Glen simply moving out of his rebellious stage? In no way am I criticizing the integrity of Decide's music, but rather questioning your moral stance as of late. -Edward Zangeneh
Here’s the deal man, we all met with the writer and photographer for a magazine called Raw from England at their hotel in Tampa to do photos and pictures. After the photo shoot we hit the bar to do the story, we were all talking about hypotheticals and I mention that I had premonitions of dying at 33. Why did I say it, who knows. Did I believe that to be the outcome for myself, no. Was I drinking, yes. Did I think that such an off the wall comment would last so long in the minds of people like yourself, no. When I was 33 I did have a really bad accident on my bike with my son on the back involving a car. We were both injured pretty bad - I had a choice then, either drop the bike or hit the car with the bike and kill myself and possibly my son or drop it and hope for the best. Well I’m still here and so is Daemon, I had the choice then and still do. I prefer to be around to keep my eyes on the road…if ya know what I mean. GB

If it were your last day on Earth, what three things would you do that you have never done before? -Stuart McVity, Sheffield, UK
I live everyday like it’s the last day on earth. GB

Which were your favorite bands to emulate when you were growing up? -Darcy Klann, Winnipeg, Canada
Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bon Scott, The Who (smashing up the gear), KISS, Ronnie DIO, Ozzy, UDO, Priest, etc. GB

How do you think your music, your vision of Deicide, would have changed if Death Metal reached the same level of popularity as lighter, more mainstream bands such as Metallica.  Do you think the corporate juggernauts would have attempted to water down the lyrics and message too much?  Where would you want to take the band, in terms of musical direction? - Jeremy Sergeant, Washingtonville, NY
That is why I’m down here and they’re up there as far as mainstream goes. I’m glad I don’t have those problems, the world loves to hate a bad guy like me, and that hate is what fuels me. I’ll water down my lyrics as soon as I get done pissing on their heads…NEVER. GB

I'm surprised you chose to cover a Deep Purple song, instead of the predictable Venom or Slayer cover every band seems to have. After all these years with no cover songs, why did you guys choose to record one, and why was it Black Night? Has Deep Purple heard your version, and if so, what do you think about it?
-Chris  Buresh  -  Springfield, VA
Well it was a novelty at first, for our own enjoyment, my idea. I always loved the Deep Purple thing, “Black Night” I thought would confuse people - it did. I guess I’m showing my age with my pick of a cover and I’m not sure if anyone in Deep Purple has heard it. I know EMI (those dicks), won’t let us put it out, I wonder why. Oh that’s right, their Mad At Money - what a bunch of jerks. GB

I have always wondered where Glen got the Deicide medallion as depicted on the first Deicide cover.  I think it is a very special object – an object whose history I can't seem to trace.  Could you please tell me where this medallion came from? -Anonymous
Dear Anonymous….The Devil Gave to me…it’s where all my evil powers come from. GB

QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY STEVE ASHEIM

Steve, are you pleased with the fact that the "Ralph is a Christian” crap has been shown up by the AWESOME guitar work he performs on the album? - Craig Russell, Houston, TX
CRAIG,
RALPH IS ABOUT AS CHRISTIAN AS HE IS SOBER, WHICH ISN'T MUCH. SO THE FACT THE PEOPLE EVEN LET SOMETHING LIKE THAT BOTHER THEM IS JUST FUEL FOR THE FIRE, AND YES HIS GUITAR WORK ON THE NEW RECORD IS ENOUGH TO SILENCE EVEN THE MOST HARDCORE "SATANISTS" OUT THERE. THEY END UP SAYING, "DEICIDE HAS A CHRISTIAN IN THE BAND! AND THE LEADS FUCKING SHRED" SO LET WHOEVER BELIEVE WHATEVER THEY WANT ABOUT RALPH, GLEN, OR WHOEVER, BUT AT THE END OF THE SENTENCE THEY'RE GONNA SAY "DAMN, HAVE YOU HEARD "THE STENCH"!?

In the last few years, many death metal bands, including yours, have become overwhelmingly successful commercially (with Scars of the Crucifix being included in Billboard's Top 100 Chart, this is hard to deny). Will this outstanding commercial success make the death metal
music scene lose its essence? How can you keep up your brutal level of lyrics and musicianship while at the same time maintaining a certain level of commercial success?
- Hossam Mohammed Moness Al-Sawaf - Nasr City, Egypt
HOSSAM,
I THINK THE GENERAL SURGE IN THE POPULARITY OF DEATH METAL, ACCORDING TO SALES FIGURES, IS SIMPLY DUE TO THE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE WHO WERE INTO EXTREME MUSIC VS. THE POPULATION. THE POPULATION GOES UP, SO DOES THE NUMBER OF EXTREME MUSIC FANS. THROW IN A FEW CONVERTS FROM THE LESS EXTREME FORMS AND YOU'LL SEE THE NUMBERS RISE. WE NEED MORE GENERATIONS OF DEICIDE FANS.

- Rob Western
Rob,
YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY ONE OF THESE GUYS WHO TAKES HIS METAL VERY SERIOUSLY. SO LETS SAY FOR A SECOND THAT RALPH IS INDEED A CHRISTIAN. IS IT A DEFAMATION OF OUR CHARACTER AS MEMBERS OF DEICDE TO PLAY WITH A CHRISTIAN, OR IS IT A CASE OF BRINGING A CHILD OF LIGHT INTO THE DARKNESS, TWISTING HIS WEAKNESSES FOR SUCCESS AND ADMIRATION AND MONEY WHILE DEFILING HIS BELIEFS, MAKING HIM DO SATANS BIDDING ON CD, ON STAGE, BACK STAGE, BRINGING HIM CLOSER AND CLOSER TO EMBRACING TO TRUE MEANING OF HUMANISM AND TEACHING HIM TO LET GO OF HIS FORMER, CHILDISH, BRAINWASHED BELIEF SYSTEM? IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DE-PROGRAM A BRAINWASHED MIND, AND IF HE WEARS A CROSS TO PROTECT HIMSELF FROM THE EVIL ON STAGE, I FIND THAT VERY AMUSING.

If you guys could tour with one band you never have, who would it be and why?  Also, who is one band in metal you would never tour with? -Daniel Johnson, Spanish Fork, UT
DANIEL,
I WOULD LIKE TO OPEN FOR A KISS REUNION TOUR BUT WOULD NEVER OPEN FOR A BAND WITH A CHICK SINGER.....JUST KIDDING LADIES!

- Scott van Dort. London, UK
SCOTT,
WE ALL KNOW HOW THE GENERES ARE DEFINED AND YES, ONCE YOU LEAVE THE DEATH METAL BLUE PRINT, YOU'RE NO LONGER DEATH METAL...I DON'T MAKE THE RULES.

I love Legion. What's up with the sound of glass shattering at the start of "Trifixion?" My theory is that it's supposed to be the sound of stained glass breaking but have not yet been able to confirm this.
- Dave Hofer, Chicago, IL
DAVE,
THE GLASS SHATTERING IS BASED ON THE ARTWORK FOR LEGION, ON THE COVER THE TRIFIXOIN IS IN A GLASS SPERE, ON THE INNER FOLD OUT IT HAS BROKEN OUT, THUS THE SOUND OF THE GLASS CELL SHATTERING OPEN AND THE TRIFIXION IS UNLEASHED UPON THE WORLD.

If it were your last day on Earth, what three things would you do that you have never done before? - Stuart McVity - Sheffield, UK
STUART,
I'D GO FIND THE THREE CHICKS I'D WANT TO SHAG THE MOST AND SHAG'EM BABY, YEAH!

- Chris Buresh, Springfield, VA
CHRIS,
I PERSONALLY WAS NEVER A BIG DEEP PURPLE FAN, THEY JUST WERE NOT HEAVY ENOUGH FOR ME, AND I NEVER REALLY WANTED TO DO A COVER, AND THE ONLY WAY WE WERE GOING TO DO IT WOULD BE TO DEIFY IT.  I THINK GLEN WAS THE ONE WHO SUGGESTED THAT SONG AND JACK AND RALPH SAID HELL THEN I SAID FUCK IT WHY NOT.

An in-depth interview with Glen Benton on Blasting-zone.com
DEICIDE’S Glen Benton has been busy with “The Stench of Redemption” and spreading death metal insanity to the eager masses. Todd @ Blasting-zone.com recently took some time out to conduct an in-depth interview with the infamous frontman of DEICIDE and boldly delved into questions that many wouldn’t dare to ask! The interview is as follows (check out the full, original text here) :
Recently, notoriously outspoken Deicide bassist/vocalist Glen Benton was kind enough to take a break from his decidedly hectic schedule to speak with us regarding, among many other things, the departure of original guitarists Brian and Eric Hoffman and the release of the group’s latest opus The Stench Of Redemption…

Todd: What really happened with the Hoffman brothers?
Glen Benton: “Basically, what happened, man, was that for quite a few years now, their attitude has been that of just giving up, ya know? …They were makin’ it miserable for Steve and I and everyone around us. When our deal with Road Runner ended, all of our deals ended, including our publishing. Our publishing agreement was changed to what everyone else’s is like. In the old days, our publishing agreement was split four ways no matter who wrote what. …They were told when the deal changed. They were told before we recorded the last record, while we recorded the record and after it was done. They were told that the publishing deal was gonna be based on who wrote what. They knew all of this. Then, when we got paid on it and they saw that it wasn’t being split four ways, they both quit.”

Todd: It’s a shame it had to come to an end over a financial agreement…
Glen: “Well, you know what? …Those two have done nothing but embarrass us, cancel shows for us, get tours cancelled…and fuck up, ya know? …Steve and I were just like ‘…hey, we’re not gonna give you our money when we do ninety percent of the writing…’. Why should we have given those guys money when all they did was cost us money? …Steve and I write the majority of everything and we consider that like share holds in a corporation, ya know? …Whoever has the most shares makes the most decisions. Steve and I got sick and tired of doing all the writing, them getting paid for it and then being assholes about it. Never once did they say ‘…thanks a lot…’ for nothing…for anything. It just got to the point with Eric and the steroids that he just a fuckin’ mental case. From what I gather, he’s been getting himself into a whole lot of trouble down here in Florida. Brian sent an E-Mail that said ‘…I quit…’ and that was it. I never heard another fuckin’ word from him. …On there way out, they tried everything and anything to try to discredit me and destroy the fuckin’ band. It got to the point where Steve and I couldn’t even fuckin’ travel with them. On the last tour, we were thirty five minuets away from taking the stage and we get a call fro those two sayin’ that they got into a car wreck, the van was totaled and Brian’s legs were hurt… I knew it was bullshit, but I had everyone give us our gear and got off the stage and we got outa there. As soon as we got home, I sent Steve over there with his digital camera and he took pictures of the van they rented sitting in the driveway without as scratch on it. It got to the point where enough is enough, ya know? It was stifling Steve’s creativity and mine, for sure. I got to the point where I wouldn’t even show up for rehearsal until I absolutely had to because I couldn’t stand to be in the same room with the two of ‘em. It got to the point where I started doin’ the Vital Remains thing because I was ready to walk from Deicide…but then those two quit. ..Deicide is my band and I don’t give a fuck what they try to do behind my back…tryin’ to steal my copyright and whatever else. I don’t give a fuck what they do. The world knows who is who and Steve and I proved it with the new record, man.”

Todd: How much actual songwriting did they do when the group was signed to Road Runner?
Glen: “…On the first album, all four of us wrote it. …It got to the point where they were stifling me because they didn’t even want me to write music because some of the best shit we did like “Dead By Dawn” was written by me. It got to the point where they were telling me to stick to writing lyrics. They wrote maybe one or two songs per record. On Scars Of The Crucifix, Eric wrote two and Brian wrote one. And it’s always been like that and then Steve and I have to come up with the bulk of it like we did on Once Upon The Cross. That’s just all me and Steve, basically. …It’s really easy to figure out which ones they wrote. The shittiest songs we’ve got? Those are the ones they wrote because they were all fillers. The songs they wrote were fillers. They’d hand me these things and they’d make no musical sense whatsoever. They’d just be a bunch of fuckin’ scales and then they’d expect me to write something great with it. I’d tell them that it sucks and then just half-ass my way through it. I hated having to write lyrics to their stuff because it fuckin’ sucked. Now, with our new record, all of the great songs are the ones Steve and I write. Now what you have is a record where it’s all me and Steve and even the fillers are fuckin’ great.”

Todd: How did you become involved with Jack and Ralph?
Glen: “…When those two pulled their bullshit, we had a tour booked for Europe. Our soundman said ‘…hey Jack from Cannibal is looking for a job…’ so I told him to contact Steve and he did… …Jack started out as the fill-in for the tour of Europe and the guy learned the whole set in a weekend. I mean he learned it and better than the Hoffman’s can play the shit. Jack came into the picture and Eric was supposed to do the tour of Europe with Jack. As we were standing at the airport waiting for Eric to show up, we keep getting these calls saying ‘…I’m on the way…’ and ‘…I’m in the limo…’. …He never showed up. The flight got postponed for two hours, so when he said he got there, we were standin’ there waiting. So that day I called (Vital Remains guitarist) Dave Suzuki and booked him a flight. He met us in Europe. …Basically, we did one show and then Steve’s Dad passed away, so we went back and then went back over. After about three weeks of doin’ the tour, I found out the promoter was rippin’ us off and wasn’t payin’ the bus company and everything else he was supposed to do, so we came home off of that one. Dave had to go do his Vital thing and Jack was like ‘…hey, Ralph needs a job…’, so I told him to give me a call. He came in the same way Jack did. Ralph used to write all the leads for Eric. Every time we’d make a new record, Eric would go over to Ralph’s house and Ralph would be like ‘…well, you could play this…’ and he’d videotape it and Eric would go home and try to learn it. Ralph’s been doin’ that since Once Upon The Cross. When it came down to Ralph, it was like ‘…well, I might as well get the mentor…’”

Todd: What can you tell us about the new record?
Glen: “…For me, it was great because I got to be me again. I got to write the way I write and not have all that negative energy around me. It made it fun for me and Steve, too. We had a fun time writing that record. …We had a lot to prove, so one thing we wanted to do was overcome their bullshit. I think the lead playing on the record is different and it’s more intricate. Steve has said he’s been dummying down the guitar parts for years so those two could play ’em. We ain’t gonna do that anymore.”

Todd: Would you say the increased intricacy makes the new record more complex?
Glen: “I don’t know if I’d say it’s more complex because the rhythms are simplistic. It’s the leads that make it sound intricate. The leads are what give it that technical flavor. People like to say ‘…oh, it’s not really Deicide…’, but it fuckin’ is because Steve and I do the bulk of the writing. So what you have is a Deicide record with two guitarists that know what the fuck they’re doing. …For us…me and Steve…things are only getting bigger and better now. We’re talkin’ about two guys that have had every lamplighter in the fuckin’ market. They’d buy it, take it to practice, fuck with it and then take it back. …Those two went through thirty or forty fuckin’ amps. It ain’t the amp, it’s you, ya know? When you can’t even set the EQ on a Marshall and get a good sound from a Marshall, there’s something fuckin’ wrong with you. Those two could never get a good sound. …When I gotta have people come in and show you how to set up your amp in the studio, that’s fucked up. Jack and Ralph are total pro. They show up, they know their sound, they know how to play a lead…they play with their fuckin’ heart and they play with feeling. And it shows. It’s more convincing.”

Todd: What was the main motivation behind canceling your most recent tour?
Glen: “We didn’t cancel. It’s being re-booked. That whole Texas thing down in Laredo…we tried out a new agent and she basically fuckin’ turned out to be not what we’re lookin’ for. Before I got knee deep in real bullshit, I chucked her outa the way and now we’ve got a real agent.”

Todd: Did things really get that out of control at the gig in Texas?
Glen: “It was just fuckin’ stupid, man. That’s why I don’t have any desire to play any of those border towns anymore. If you can’t live up to your end of the fuckin’ agreement, then you don’t need my business. I’ll never go back there. I’ll play up in Dallas and Fort Worth and shit like that, but I will not play anymore border towns. There’s too much of a risk of getting ripped off. You do it once to us and you’ll never get a second chance. The promoters down there fucked over the fans, man. Don’t blame us; blame you local fuckin’ promoters who didn’t pay me in full. …And it was every fuckin’ night, too. It wasn’t just one night… …If you go to fuckin’ Mexico City; they’ll pay you in full. You’d think that being in a border town in the United States; you wouldn’t have to deal with that shit. …I won’t do business with people that won’t keep their fuckin’ word. And this agent was a total ding dong, passed out in my fuckin’ dressing room. …As soon as I got home, I got out my chopping block and my fuckin’ axe and started beheading all these dumbasses in my life. …It was like one of those fuckin’ colon cleansing treatments…”

Todd: In hindsight, how has the Tampa, Florida Death Metal scene changed over the years?
Glen: “…What scene? …For me, this place has lost its luster. I’m thinking of relocating. I wouldn’t know, man. I don’t go out much, because when I do, I end up having to punch somebody's lights out. I kinda stay outa that shit because I’ll end up goin’ down to a gig, I’ll get too much alcohol in me and I ended up exposing myself and diving off the stage and shit. So I really don’t go to the gigs, man and I really don’t drink anymore. I kinda gave up on all that shit. I don’t go out much. I just stay here in my little fucked up world.”

Todd: Do you think you’re playing and singing has improved since you quit drinking?
Glen: “…Yeah, but people get thinking like I was a drunk or like I drank everyday. …Once in a while I would drink and I would overdo it. Back in the day, during my first divorce, I was poundin’ down a bottle of Jack Daniels a night…sometimes two. …I’ve never been one to let shit like that stick around in my life for too long, so I gave up the drinkin’, man. I may have a few beers here and there, but I get really bad headaches when I drink alcohol now…”

Todd: What ultimately led to the group not resigning with Road Runner Records? What was the final straw?
Glen: “…Our deal with Road Runner wasn’t that bad. It was The Hoffman’s that made it bad. When you’ve got those two freakin’ idiots callin’ you names and threatening you every day, of course they’re gonna shelf your records. I’d work out deals with Road Runner and those two would come over behind me and stab me in the back and fuck up the whole deal. …Things now, for me and Steve, have never been better, man. Finally we’ve got some peace in our lives, ya know? Now we can go out and do a tour without worrying about this idiot doin’ that or this jackass not showin’ up. We ain’t gotta worry about that anymore. Now when we go out, we have fun. We do a lot of playing outside of the country….Korea and places like that. It’s nice to be able to do my job without fuckin’ babysitting.”

Todd: How much of a difference is there between domestic and overseas audiences?
Glen: “Well, kids here in the states are spokes because they get shows every weekend. The kids in South America go completely fuckin’ apeshit crazy, ya know, because they don’t get that shit everyday. Some of the places in the states…all the major cities, they usually have pretty good crowds. That’s why on this tour, we’re not playing any of the smaller markets. We’re just playing all the major cities. I have no desire to play Bumfuck, Ohio…and little places in Pennsylvania, ya know? …If you wanna come see the show, you’ll make the drive. A lot of these bands go out for two months and they’ll play every little bump in the road. I’d just as soon stick to playing the major markets and leave all that shit.”

Todd: How legitimate is your dedication to Satanism? How do you respond to those that insist it’s all an act?
Glen: “…I’m almost forty fuckin’ years old. I don’t give a fuck what anybody thinks. I believe what I believe and I’ve been true to my fuckin’ word for twenty years now. Am I out to convince people of what I believe in? No. I could give two fucks. Take it or leave it, man. I don’t give a fuck what anybody thinks. When I write, I write from my soul and that’s what comes out of me. …To be a Satanist, do I have to…dance around a fire and sacrifice things to nothing? No. That’s stupid bullshit, man. That’s Hollywood Satanism to me. It’s just like Christianity. It’s a philosophy, man. I live my life like this: you fuck with me, I’ll fuck with you, ya know? It’s as simple as that. …There ain’t no turn the other cheek bullshit. It’ll never be like that with me. Am I sitting in a dark room chanting and shit? No, that’s retarded, man. Do I walk this earth proclaiming to be the Devil? No. I sing what I sing about. It’s up to you to decided which way you want to go with it.”

Todd: Do you feel the emerging popularity of Black Metal has had an impact on the Death Metal genre?
Glen: “I don’t think so, man. …I’ve never been one to say we’re a Death Metal band. When I started playin’ this shit, there wasn’t even a title for it. It was just considered Extreme Music. When Chuck from Death and all these other bands started doin’ it…we didn’t say ‘…let’s start a Death Metal band….’ We said let’s start a Metal band…”

Todd: Do you still consider Deicide just a Metal band?
Glen: “…We’re a Metal band and I sing what I sing. It’s never gonna fuckin’ change. …Back then, we more of a Satanic band, ya know? That was our thing. The music was about Satan and being anti-God. That’s where I was comin’ from. …The death of Jesus is about the only thing I talk about, so… Labels are just retarded. It’s like Judas Priest. Are we gonna label them as Metal?”

Todd: Yeah…
Glen: “Okay, well I don’t consider bands like Cinderella and all that to be in the same category as Priest. …I’ve got a track that I did when I was eighteen…it was one of the first tracks I ever wrote lyrics for and it’s about the Devil (laughs). It’s about death, it’s about Satan (laughs). Back then, people were just fuckin’ mortified by that shit, and that’s what fueled me (laughs). It was like ‘…wow, if you write lyrics about the Devil, it really gets under people’s skin…’ For me, I’ve always been into Horror movies, the evil side of life…all that fuckin’ shit. I’ve read all the books about Crowley, the Satanic Bible and all the black arts and shit. And I read ‘em just like I would read a Tom Clancy novel, ya know? Some of it I agree with and some of it I don’t agree with. I’ve read the book of Mormon…I’ve read a lot of different fuckin’ things, ya know? I read just because it’s gives me inspiration. The Jehovah Witnesses…if there’s a monthly flyer and I get a hold of it, there’s a song right there, ya know? It gives me all the inspiration that I need. Like all the priests that get popped for molesting kids. You can’t but that kind of inspiration, ya know? They give me more shit to write about. I don’t come up on this shit on my own. They give me this shit. …I could have gone political with it and sang all political songs, but that gets old. Killing God and the hypocrisies of religion…that never gets old, man. Not for me. As long as they’re here, there’s plenty to write about.”

Todd: What was the main inspiration behind recording a cover of Deep Purple’s “Black Night”? Have all the legal issues surrounding it been resolved?
Glen: “No, EMI is refusing to allow us to put it out, so it’s only available as a free download and shit, I think. We can’t charge money for it. That was just done as a parody. I mentioned doing it and one day when I went to practice, Steve and Jack had put it together.”

Todd: Where do you see Deicide in ten years?
Glen: “I think things are gonna start blowin’ up, especially…when they start playin’ the video on MTV. Things are just getting’ better and better, man. …We’re later in our lives now and we’ve made a change where a lot of other bands haven’t been able to change. A personnel change of that magnitude is a lot to overcome. We’ve overcome it, so right now is a good time for us. …We got rid of the Hoffman’s, and now I’ve got more work than I know what to do with. I’ve got fuckin’ endorsements comin’ in from every Goddamn direction, man. I’ve got nothing but positive things happening right now. When they were around, it was just doom and gloom. …Everything around them and everything that came out of their mouths was just negative. They couldn’t even rent their own vehicle for tours. Steve would have to call the rental company and rent the fuckin’ van from them. I hate to use the word retarded because retarded people don’t deserve to be lumped in with those two jackasses, ya know? If you throw both of their intelligences together, you might have a sixth grade education. The one guy can’t even write. Whenever he posts something on Blabbermouth, we always know it’s him (laughs). …This is what sealed their coffin, man. Steve was the only ally between me and them okay? Steve kept this band together for years by being the go-between me and those fuckers. When Steve’s Dad passed away, Eric Hoffman went on Blabbermouth and posted a bunch of really derogatory remarks about Steve’s Dad dying. ‘…that’s what ya get, you backstabbing motherfucker…’ That kind of shit. …Steve called me up and was like ‘…well, there goes the reunion tour…’ …They fuckin’ sealed their fates. …They’re their own worst enemies. They did this shit to themselves. When you say something about someone's parent passing away in such a manner on the internet, like that in public…they did it to themselves, man. Steve has nothing but hate for those two fuckers now, man. But we don’t walk around dwelling about it…only when we have to talk about it. With this record, we both know we’re gonna have to deal with the Hoffman issues. …After the first couple of shows, I didn’t hear anyone yelling for Eric or Brian anymore. …We’ve got two guys that smoke all over their leads, ya know? And we all have fun and people see that. Before, thirty five minuets in, they were walking off the stage on me. Now, we play an hour and thirty five minuets and everyone’s happy to be up there doin’ it. …People used to bitch about our sets being short, but now that we’ve got all of that out of the way, things are where they should be right now, ya know?”

DEICIDE video banned by UK TV station
UK music TV channel Scuzz TV has banned the new video for Deicide’s ‘Homage For Satan’ condemning it for being offensive and derogatory.
In a statement a Scuzz representative declared that “the lyrical content is religiously offensive, derogatory, and can be read as improper exploitation of any susceptibilities of the audience”.

They further commented “With regards the imagery itself, the inclusion of a priest or religious figure in any belief system is always a very touchy subject, but the possession of one such person, and the disparaging respect for the Christian Bible is in direct conflict with Ofcom regulations”.

The video, featuring blood-splattered zombies on a rampaging mission to capture a priest forcibly underlies Deicide’s explicit stance against religion, yet is a representation of death metal at its best. The banning of the video coincides with the eagerly anticipated release of Deicide’s highly acclaimed album ‘The Stench Of Redemption’ and effectively removes the chance for extreme music to be represented to a mass audience.

The outright banning of the video marks a worrying trend, as the station declares that they ‘generally don’t play death/black metal on Scuzz anymore’ yet boldly label themselves as a ‘rock hard’ channel.

To make your own mind up about the video you can check it out on You Tube here.

DEICIDE's Ralph Santolla offers up his account of the Laredo, Texas events
DEICIDE's Ralph Santolla offers up his personal statement regarding the events of July 14 in Laredo, Texas. DEICIDE are currently preparing for their US fall headlining tour with JUNGLE ROT and HURTLOCKER and are set to release "The Stench of Redemption" on August 22, which is being called some of their best work since Legion. Check Earache.com for latest DEICIDE news and to pre-order "The Stench of Redemption."

His account is as follows:
"We
pulled up a at the hotel in Laredo around 4 o' clock in the afternoon. One of the local promoters, Liz, tells us to be downstairs at 6:30 to go to the venue. After we sit outside waiting for 45 minutes in the heat, we decided to go on our own.
The first thing I see when we get there is this Liz chick sitting on her ass in their venue. I said "Hey thanks for leaving us sitting around waiting for you to pick us up". Not a great start. Things were bad from the beginning - there was no stage and tons of gear everywhere. The promoter said,'We'll set you guys up after all the other bands, right before you play.' We were like, that's not how it works, they can set up in front of us. Thats pretty normal. It took these people an hour to figure out how to move 1/2 a drum set out of our way. A bad start. We asked for 2 hours for our rider, [to get some water] but this Liz girl wasn't capable of giving straight answers to anything and was a lot more concerned with her local band buddies concerns than putting on a show.
We should never have been booked there in the first place. Right before we go on stage, they tell us their not paying us what they agreed top in the contract. A lot of promoters who aren't experienced don't seem to understand a guarantee means just that, a guarantee. If they risk their cash to put on a show, and then they don't promote or whatever, no matter who's fault it is, they take the hit - not the bands. They never complain when they make a lot of extra cash, but they squeal like a stuck pig when they don't. This is our career and we were ripped off - you can't go into Wal Mart and just take whatever you want without paying.
We go on stage and the power starts cutting out instantly. They didn't provide a venue, enough power, a stage, the money, or a working PA. We had to stop every 30 seconds and finally somebody says they're making us stop, so we go off stage. I went upstairs on the balcony top find my cigarettes. I'm standing there talking to the guys from Ringworm, and I turned around and a police officer pepper sprays me and throws me on the ground.
They didn't say "Stop, get on the ground," nothing - just ran up to me and sprayed me. They threw me down, and I said "Why am I being arrested" and one of them says, " you threw a beer bottle at me." I replied, "ME??", and one of the other cops starts yelling " SHUT THE FU*K UP, SHUT THE FU*K UP, I SAW YOU I SAW YOU." Then one of them puts his knee into my neck and puts all of his weight on it and starts grinding my face into the ground. Now, the thing is, this whole time, I'm just laying there being still. I can't see, I can't breathe - nothing. So it's not like I was struggling or resisting. If you've never been pepper sprayed, it fu*king hurts. Now my hand is all fu*ked up and i've got a loose tooth.
Jack Owen [Deicide guitarist] told me the next day that he saw somebody in the crowd throw a beer up in the air. It bounced off off something and hit the ground near the cop and then all the cops went running up the stairs. That's it. I've done a lot of stupid things, but throwing bottles at cops isn't one of them."

DEICIDE a statement regarding the events of 14th July in Laredo, Texas
On July 14th, 2006, DECIDE were caught in a whirlwind of unfortunate events that occurred during their performance at Hustlers in Laredo, Texas. DEICIDE were in Texas on a short week-long tour promoting their forthcoming release, "The Stench of Redemption," when they were faced with payment issues from the show's promoter, as well as a slough of technical issues that were also experienced by opening band, RINGWORM.
Lead singer Glen Benton verbally expressed his displeasure with the situation to the crowd, but Benton was anxiously ready to forge on and play a full set for the audience despite prior set backs when club promoters called Laredo police. Restlessness grew amongst the crowd, resulting in several bottles being thrown around the venue causing mass confusion throughout the venue and between the police, crowd and band. Laredo police closed down the show, forcing DEICIDE to cut their performance short. "We wanted to finish the show," Benton genuinely states but the show came to a halt when police stormed the venue and surprisingly maced and arrested a member of the band on unclear charges. Benton states that the police used "excessive force" and many concert goers have confirmed this with unofficial observations. DEICIDE plan to move forward from this incident and would like to thank all the fans that came out for their patience and dedication. An official statement from Ralph Santolla regarding these events will be issued shortly. DEICIDE will be releasing "The Stench of Redemption" on August 22, followed by a fall headlining tour featuring fellow metal brothers HURTLOCKER and JUNGLE ROT.
