Anata blown away by US debut at Maryland Deathfest
Swedish tech-death maestros Anata made their US debut appearance at the Maryland Deathfest over the weekend of May 27 and 28, alongside Earache labelmates Severe Torture and Municipal Waste.
According to one audience member “Anata had a bigger audience than any other band; bigger than Vital Remains, bigger than Dismember and Necrophagist. The place was packed!”

Vocalist and band mastermind Fredrik Schälin enthused; “The reactions from the crowd was great, both on stage and afterwards. Lots of photos of us were shot and albums signed. A lot of fans told us that we were the main reason for them going to the festival. Even some of the other bands (Neuraxis, Alarum) were thrilled to meet us. But this was of course mutual, both great bands”.... “We were blown away!”

The band’s new album, ‘The Conductor’s Departure’ is due out via Wicked World on June 19

ANATA set release date for ‘THE CONDUCTORS DEPARTURE’
Swedish tech-death masters ANATA will release ‘THE CONDUCTORS DEPARTURE’ on Wicked World / Earache on June 12th 2006
‘Recorded at Studio Mega (The Crown, Impious, Lake of Tears, Beseech etc) it features 10 brand new tracks continuing the path that have seen the band likened to Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, Gojira and Necrophagist.
Merging blindingly technical riffing with an ear for melody, Anata have gained a reputation for blatantly sidestepping the In Flames imitation of their homeland. Instead, the band have found themselves mentioned as the missing link between Death Metal and the technical ‘math-core’ hardcore scene.

The band’s last album, ‘Under A Stone With No Inscription’, earned rave reviews around the globe.
Tracklisting:
01. Downward Spiral into Madness
02. Complete Demise
03. Better Grieved Than Fooled
04. The Great Juggler
05. Cold Heart Forged in Hell
06. I Would Dream of Blood
07. Disobedience Pays
08. Children’s Laughter
09. Renunciation
10. The Conductor’s Departure
Words of praise for Anata:
Rock Sound
‘So add some noisecore, mathcore, jazz-metal fusion, melody and some superspazzoid song structure to the traditional death metal formula and hey presto! - Out comes Anata’

Kerrang!
‘Anata have managed to get the right balance between bending the listener’s brain with complexities, and good old fashioned loud bits, to make an album that’s INTERESTING rather than repellently obtuse.’

Metal Hammer
‘Anata have taken the concept of Death Metal to new levels. The gauntlet is thrown.’

Studio update from Henrik Drake
Henrik Drake of ANATA has checked in with an update on how things are progressing at Studiomega, Sweden where they are holed up recording the follow up to last years "Under A Stone With No Inscription'.
Here’s what Henrik has to say about work in progress for the tentatively titled ‘THE CONDUCTOR’S DEPARTURE’

"As of today, bass guitar and guitar (including clean guitar and additional guitars but excluding guitar solos) have been recorded for nine of the ten songs for "The Conductor's Departure” album. Still to be recorded is the 8-minute long title track of the album”.

“We feel very satisfied with the guitar and bass work so far and when listening to what we have recorded so far I feel that this album is truly a more powerful performance than our earlier works”.

“We have all been very well prepared and the recordings have proceeded smoothly. It is quite obvious that we all have progressed a lot on our instruments and since the album is partly complex all these parts have come out as audible as they deserve”.
“Speaking for my self I must say that this is my best bass performance on any ANATA album yet. The bass is, as Fredrik Schalin said earlier, a big part of the melodies in the new ANATA material and it has been a pleasure to listen to how nicely the guitar and bass lines work together along with Conny's tight and intense drumming. I started to record the heavy and quite slow "I Would Dream Of Blood" and then I recorded "Downward Spiral Into Madness" which is partly kind of tricky on bass guitar. On the instrumental "Children's Laughter" I played most of the tracks without a pick, which was a new studio experience for me, but playing finger style really added that extra feeling to the song”.

On most of the tracks, especially "The Great Juggler", "Cold Heart Forged in Hell", "Renunciation" and "Better Grieved than Fooled" the bass lines partly differ a lot from the guitar melodies which adds an extra dimension to the music and the harmonies."

Stay tuned for a further update as the album comes together

Studio update from Conny Pettersson
Technical death metal destroyers, ANATA have begun recording the follow up to last years "Under A Stone With No Inscription'. Drummer Conny Pettersson checks in with news on how the first few days have panned out:
“Finally the time had come to begin the recording of Anata’s fourth full length album. And it was up to me to begin with the drums. Some work had already been done with the drums since I recorded with Trendkill one month earlier in Studiomega. So the drums were in place and most of the microphones. But the Studiomega engineer Christian Silver thought that Anata deserved something extra for this album and bought four new microphones only to be used on the cymbals. So with a microphone for each drum and cymbal it ended up with 18 microphones for the drums to get perfect sound and separation of the drum kit”.
”After two days of sound checking we could start the recording of the first track. My first choice was to begin with the heaviest song ‘I Would Dream Of Blood’ - The ballad of the album so to speak. Then I continued with Anata’s only instrumental song ever, called ‘Children’s Laughter’. After this warm up it was time for some real action and I recorded ‘Downward Spiral Into Madness’, ‘Renunciation’ and ‘Complete Demise’ “.
”Well, on and on each track was recorded and a lot of hard work was put into it by both me and the engineer. If you compare this recording to ‘Under A Stone With No Inscription’ I can say it was more demanding both physically and mentally. I hit the drums twice as hard, the songs are much faster and there is a lot more details to keep in mind. In some fills and blast beats I thought my arms would break in half, but fortunately they didn’t”.

Stay tuned for more details.

ANATA Begin recording new album
Technical death metal destroyers, ANATA will start recording the follow up to last years "Under A Stone With No Inscription' through July at Studiomega, Sweden, where the band have recorded all their output over the past decade. Starting today!
Earache will be keeping you up to date with regular studio reports as work progresses but let’s start by hearing how ANATA frontman Fredrik Schalin is raring to get stuck in:

“At the moment, the working title for this album is "The Conductor's Departure". It symbolises the losing of control of your own life. You have all these abilities and potential, but it's all going to waste because you can't make something out of it. Like an orchestra without the conductor, hence the title!”

Some of the song titles already considered among the ten tracks of furious death metal are: "Complete Demise", "Downward Spiral Into Madness", "The Great Juggler", "I Would Dream Of Blood" and "Disobedience Pays". Over to Fredrik again:

“In general this album will be a lot faster, but it also has a lot of slower, heavy and groovy sections. When it comes to brutality, impact and assault, I think most people should know what to expect from Anata. It will be brutal as hell, but it's also much more interesting when it comes to harmonies. I should tell you something about these”

Which is exactly what he does:

“The harmonies are much... deeper. Like our drummer Conny (Petterson) said the first time he heard some of it: ‘It really sounds like a skeleton playing an old church organ’. I have no idea what that might trigger in your mind, but I was flattered. The thing is that sometimes we should not talk about songs consisting of guitar riffs. Guitars, bass and drums were written at the same time, sometimes note by note. For some parts, if you take the bass guitar out, it will all sound very confusing. In a lot of the harmonies, the bass guitar is the key to the rest of the music. Therefore it will be pretty audible. Otherwise most metal bands seem to use this instrument as some kind of filling in the low end. That is such a waste”.

Stay tuned for regular updates and photos!

Exclusive Anata UK Tour Diary
Tuesday 24 February - Manchester
Arrived in Manchester about 4 pm. Nice flight with free drinks, and all and our luggage including some guitars and drum-related stuff seemed to be OK. Vocalist/guitarist Fredrik couldn’t hear a thing; he’d just had a bad cold and obviously his ears were not ready to fly. We were collected by some of the crew and soon on our way to see the bus, a venue called Bierkeller and meeting the other bands. First impressions: Martin of Decapitated screaming “Visa fitta, hora” (meaning “show pussy, whore” in Swedish - very impressive!). Vogg of Decapitated had just puked on the bus…..The venue was kind of small but very cold. The hi-hat stand to be used didn’t have a pedal – it’s standard and crucial for Conny’s way of playing. Our regards to the tour manager who got us a new stand in no time. On this opening night we had no sound check, but in spite of this, the gig went pretty OK. We met a lot of nice people that night… this was really something special to us as this was our first encounter with fans outside of Sweden. Fredrik signed some girl’s belly, but realised a few seconds too late that he just missed the great opportunity of dropping the pen into her underwear. Of course, this would have been completely accidental. Later, after being invited by the Decaps, we shared a nice bottle of vodka, while listening to Erykah Badu.

Wednesday 25 February - Bradford
Wasn’t a very long drive to Bradford, we were there in less than one hour. Once there we had some great pizza for breakfast. We had it in an Indian restaurant. In fact, pretty much everything in this part of town turned out to be Indian, even its inhabitants. Anyway, the venue (Rios) was a lot bigger than the previous one and it also had a really fat PA. Unfortunately, we had to start our set five minutes after the venue opened. About 200 people got to see Fredrik step on his guitar cable, making a part of 'A Problem Yet to Be Solved' unplugged.
In the next song, 'Sewerages of the mind' he also broke a string. The audience was however very supportive. Indeed, before getting the chance to get off stage, Conny was asked to sign so many autographs that the tour manager ultimately came up behind his back and screamed in rage. He commanded us to get our equipment off stage, in order to make place for Thus Defiled. But of course, meeting our fans was both more fun and important.
Thursday 26 February - Nottingham
As Nottingham happens to be where Earache’s office is at, we just had to check it out. Their staff made us feel at home; we were allowed to steal as many Earache albums as we could possibly carry back to the bus. But before doing so, we had a drink with our label manager (Dan Tobin) at the oldest pub in England. On our way there we saw the castle of Nottingham and met Robin Hood. He was made out of metal. The venue, called RockCity, was really cool and our dressing rooms were loaded with beer, vodka and even fresh towels. And the gig… was great, the best one so far. Even though we were the opening act, the venue was completely packed in front of the stage.
The sound on stage was excellent, and the audience was amazing, so enthusiastic. In order to celebrate this, we had a nice party afterwards. Conny met the original drummer of Saxon, and Fredrik had to call for help to get himself on the bus.
Friday 27 February - Bristol
Just like the venue in Manchester, this one was called Bierkeller although they had very little in common. Although the backstage area had a smell of rotten eggs, this was a very nice club with a very nice stage. Hey, that dinner was great! Later, one of the guys in Rotting Christ told Henrik that he was a kick boxer. When demonstrating a kick, he broke the pants he was about to wear on stage. The gig was cool, although we (again) had to start our set a bit too early. We enjoyed it, and it seemed like the people did so as well.
We also enjoyed the club night that followed Decapitated’s set. We met a lot of cool and interesting people there. Some were very pretty as well. A girl named Charlotte had the most beautiful smile Fredrik ever saw. Conny met two lesbians who mistook him for a Swedish porn star. Too bad the bus left for London early, at 00:30 am.
Friday 28 February - London
This was the final gig of the tour. It took place at a really cool venue called The Underworld (Camden). The 500 tickets were sold out, and there was a queue outside even hours before the show was about to start. Thus, when entering the stage, there was a lot of people there to watch the gig. The crowd’s reactions were incredible and we had a really good time on stage. Yet, the most incredible thing this night, was probably the four or five people that had come all the way from France to see us play. We felt really honoured. Things felt really strange. Before this tour, we hadn’t done a show in one and a half year. We had never played outside of Sweden, and now this.
Another thing that felt quite strange was meeting some Swedish friends of ours, that nowadays live in London (Andreas’ friend Elin and Fredrik’s soul mate Joanna). It wasn’t surprising that they showed up – they were on our guest list – it just felt a bit unreal. The bus departed at 1 am, in order to get the bands to the airports. It felt a bit sad that the tour was already over, we would have loved to do a few more weeks right away. Hopefully we’ll be back soon… maybe next time we’ll get to see some other countries as well.
Anata would like to thank everyone who contributed
in making this tour a sheer pleasure:
Our fans and others who came to see the shows
Decapitated, Rotting Christ and Thus Defiled
Tour crew: Marios, Emma, Gavin
Everyone at Earache
Thanks, and hope to see you soon!

New album hailed as a classic on eve of debut UK tour
The notoriously hard to pigeonhole ANATA are about to bring their dissonant death metal sickness to the UK for the very first time, as guests of Decapitated. Expectation is high for the band's first visit to these shores, and rightly so, as the reviews for the band's groundbreaking new album 'Under A Stone With No Inscription' being nothing short of rapturous...
"Techhnical, thrashy, intricate and brutal, Anata have taken me totally by surprised with this outstanding new release.'" (Metal Update.com 5/5) www.metaljudgment.com

"... an entirely fresh and original approach to death metal... This is a virtuoso display of crushing speed, dexterity and ruthless sonic savagery that manages to stretch extreme metal’s boundaries while providing plenty of moments of satisfying, primal bludgeon at the same time. All in all, a devastating start to 2004."
(Kerrang! Australia)

"... an absolute must-have, and deserves a place right at the front of the shelf in every Death Metal collection. I have nothing more to say, apart from that I will cease to understand this world should this album fail to come as a bombshell. 14/15 points"
(Legacy Germany)

"´Under A Stone...´ is an impressive slab of modern death metal, moulding a foundation of brutally effective riffs around a crucially melodic set of songs, performed to an astonishingly high degree of expertise... Anata have taken the concept of death metal to new levels. The gauntlet is thrown."
(Metal Hammer UK)

"... Anata are a clever example of a band willing to push back the ideas of what a death metal band should actually be... ´Under A Stone...´ is likely to appeal just as much to a Deicide fan as it will a SikTh or Dillinger Escape Plan fan, and for that, they must be applauded... this is 45 minutes of metal madness that's a delight to listen to!"

(Rock Sound UK)

"I don’t like to fool around with the “masterpiece” term, but in the case of this record I can’t have such a problem. In fact, I consider this review totally useless except it gives me the opportunity to publicly state that Under A Stone With No Inscription is a landmark in the Death Metal history and so an essential purchase"
www.voicesfromthedarkside.de

"Anata are one of the very few death metal bands actively working towards progress in an otherwise very stale genre... Anata play death metal for the next generation. Enough of the bands rehashing the same riffs of yesteryear, with equal parts brutality and complexity, this is the direction I'd like to see this style of music take."
www.into-obscurity.com

"Anata combines drumming precise like anything, with thrash style riffing and nimble-fingered melodies. Varied and very fun to listen to, clever sort of. And from a technical perspective, absolutely brilliant."
www.musiklandet.com

"Remarkable on this album are, besides the guitar work, the drum parts of Conny Pettersson. His drum performance is really great. If you want your music to be aggressive, fast, brutal and melodic, then I advice you to run to your local dealer and buy this one. Great stuff."
www.quintessence.sh

"Opening track 'Shackled To Guilt' explodes from the speakers like shards of flaming debris... The breakneck pace of the album is retained throughout, with the listener rarely getting an opportunity to catch their breath. Stunning musicianship abounds, with the 4-finger tapping sections of album highlight 'Entropy Within' proving the musical dexterity of the guitarists."
www.ultimatemetal.com

"Consequently "Under a Stone With No Inscription" turns out to be an invigorating, exciting listen -- technically masterful and as brutal as a pitbull on acid."
www.chroniclesofchaos.com

"Anata are using their abilities to destroy the death metal norm... "Under a Stone with no Inscription" is the perfect title for an album filled with music that cannot be categorized because it is a master of many forms and a servant to none"
www.metabite.com

“‘Under A Stone With No Inscription’ is a sprawling labyrinth of free-flowing, effortlessly executed brutality that sets the pace for any self-respecting complex metal band to follow.”

'STONE' HITS U.S. STORES NEXT WEEK!
Anata's critically-hailed Wicked World debut, "Under A Stone a With No Inscription" hits U.S. stores on February 24th.
Melding death metal endurance with noise-core twistedness, Sweden's wildly unique Anata have earned such descriptions as 'Decapitated meets Dillinger Escape Plan' and 'Cryptopsy meets Botch'. Down-tuned, guttural, and aggressive, yet free-flowing and dissonant, Anata are leading heavy music into the future.

Check out this quote from a review on Deadtide.com:
"Starting with the opener, 'Shackled to Guilt', the album delivers a breathless volley of riffs that makes jazz sound like a piece of cake. But to balance the equation the song erupts into a massive groove riff that brings a volatile new direction to the band's formula of being able to explode into fits of aggression that complement the technicality. The variety in the first 3 songs alone is beyond amazing and it is catchy to boot. 'Dance to the Song of Apathy' is massive from beginning to finish; using a humongoenormous riff to drive itself it goes through all the phases of techinicality but still retains its imposing presence which can only be titled as crushing. 'Sewerages of the Mind' brings in an added level of melody backed up by the crushing drums; it runs the line between catchy, devastating and complex. It's no surprise that what you get when you combine those 3 adjectives is a masterpiece that sets the bar for where death metal needs to be in the 21st century. Zyklon who?"

And this one from Into-Obscurity.com:
"'Under A Stone With No Inscription' is a title indicative of what you're getting yourself into with this album. It defies classification, yet it rumbles with all the familiar sounds of pure, brutal death metal. Of course, pile on top of that dizzying dissonance, uncommon song structures and generally interesting complexity. Anata are great because they don't totally alienate themselves from the death metal sound, but they aren't happy repeating it either. Sometimes it's the simple incorporation of melody ('Sewerages Of The Mind') while others, it is something a bit more technical ('Shackled To Guilt'). One thing that remains consistent throughout the album - you'll never know what to expect and when it comes, it won't disappoint. Anata play death metal for the next generation. Enough of the bands rehashing the same riffs of yesteryear; with equal parts brutality and complexity, this is the direction I'd like to see this style of music take."

Anata - 'Under A Stone With No Inscription' unveiled!
Undefinable Swedish Death crew Anata have finally completed work on their brand new album, their first for Wicked World. Although recording began in February of this year at Studio Mega, a myriad set of problems meant that the recording process was far from smooth. However, undaunted, the band emerged from the hell of the recording sessions with a quite remarkable record, esoterically titled 'Under A Stone With No Inscription'.
The finished product is sure to confound notions of what Death Metal can be - with convulsive, stop/start structures, fluid, sprawling guitar work and enviably precise rhythms, 'Under A Stone...' is a complex beast that is unmistakably Death Metal, and yet gives most tech-noisecore bands a run for their money with its abrasive dissonance and disregard for convention.
The full tracklisitng for the album is as follows:
01. Shackled to guilt
02. A problem yet to be solved
03. Entropy within
04. Dance to the song of apathy
05. Sewerages of the mind
06. Built on sand
07. Under the debris
08. The drowning
09. Leaving the spirit behind
10. Any kind of magic or miracle
'Under A Stone With No Inscription' is set for an early 2004 release.

Anata complete album recording
It's been a long time coming but we have finally received tracks from the forthcoming Anata album, due on Wicked World at the end of the year. The early listens have uncovered that the musical progression of the band from the previous 'Dreams of Death and Dismay' record is astonishing.

Whilst being firmly routed in the Death Metal field, the new material takes a multi-dimensional turn through blistering riff work and incredibly tight, compacted rhythms, and actually brings to mind the dissonance and complexity of the US noisecore scene! Fans should not fear however - the sound is firmly Death Metal, but such is the intensity and chameleon like nature of the songs that those appreciative of the more 'out there' aspects of the more technically challenging metal/noise bands that Anata could well be on their way to defining a whole new sound.

Early favorites include the savagely, hideously melodic cut-throat 'A Problem Yet to Be Solved', the caustic, shape-shifting 'Shackled to Guilt' and the instant foot-tapper 'Entropy Within'. Anata might just be the missing link between the older technical Death Metal bands of the mid-90's and the recent noisecore innovations...whatever this is, its breathing new direction and purpose into Death Metal.

More news on release dates and album titles to follow.

ANATA: EXCLUSIVE
STUDIO REPORT

New Wicked World signings Anata are halfway through the recording sessions for their new album, the band's third overall.

The sessions are taking place at Studio Mega in Sweden, and are progressing well according to bassist Henrik Drake, despite the heavy workload.
'We are working through every night to get this record done, and may run a little over schedule, but the end results will be worth it', says Drake.

The band see this record as a progression from the previous 'Dreams of Death and Dismay' outing but fans can expect more of the same potent mix of high level, technical playing combined with the savage edge that has helped Anata establish themselves so far as cult favourites.
More news on the album soon...

...update...update...update...update...update...update...
New Wicked World signings Anata are still hard at work recording their new album in their native Sweden. Drummer Conny Pettersson brings you latest developments straight from the heart of the process...

Saturday 2003/02/01
Entered the completely new built Studio Mega to record the third Anata album in the evening and with help from Fredrik we put together my drum kit.

Sunday 2003/02/02
Continued with the drums, putting up microphones and tried different recording techniques and microphones for all parts of the drum kit. The sound of the tom toms was very satisfying, sounds a little like the toms on Slayer’s "Seasons in the Abyss". And after a little tuning and some corrections of some microphones the entire drum sound was excellent.

Monday 2003/02/03
Did a last drum sound check before installing the "talk back" microphone and my "fold back" hearing so that I could hear myself properly and talk to the producer and Fredrik in the control room. And being the first band to ever record in the new Studio Mega, my hearing system was not installed yet. So our producer Christian Silver had to go out and buy a soldering iron to get all the cables in place. But it was nice to see him in action and that he really knows everything about a studio and easily solves any problem. And then it worked perfectly. Later in the evening we began to record the programmed metronome for the four first songs from our portable studio to the two inch 24 track recorder.

Tuesday 2003/02/04
Began recording the four first songs in following order: 1. "The Drowning." 2. "Leaving the Spirit Behind." 3. "A Problem Yet to Be Solved." 4. "Built On Sand".
Did a few takes on every song except on "A Problem Yet to Be Solved" which only required one take and started to record the metronome for the next three songs onto the next reel.

Wednesday 2003/02/05
Started early to record the next three songs in following order 1. "Dance to the Song of Apathy." 2. "Sewerages of the Mind." 3. "Under the Debris."
Once again the recording went very well. The only problem was that "Dance to the Song of Apathy" the easiest song of them all to play, took the longest time to record. And the very difficult song "Sewerages of the Mind" I played perfectly from start to end on the first try. Sometimes the strangest things can happen in a studio. But I felt very pleased that the recording of the drums "Sewerages...." went so smoothly because it’s a very strong track on the album.

Thursday 2003/02/06
The last recording day for the drums, and the three hardest and fastest songs remained including the longest one. I began with the longest track "Any Kind of Magic or Miracle." and then I recorded "Entropy Within." and "Shackled to Guilt." After all the songs were done, we listen to it and our producer said that the quality of the drumming was extremely high, which made me happy after three days of hard work. The result was great, as planned, and we all felt satisfied with the drum tracks, even my little drum solo on "Shackled to Guilt" was very pleasing to hear that it came out so well. Our producer thought that the last part of the drum solo maybe could be too complicated for the average listener to understand. Well, it’s going to be very interesting to hear what people think about it. The only problem we had during the recording was to keep my feet warm, and our producer found two 1000W lamps, one for each foot to keep them defrosted every cold winter day.
